Golf - Tuesday 10th August 2010 - Round 1 of Ladies Championships

The weather was very unkind to us for the first round of the 2010 Ladies Championships.
We had steady rain for most of the morning that did ease off from time to time but basically we were very wet & the course was soggy with some nuisance water on some of the greens. Under the circumstances some of our players came in with very good scores as it was hard going out there.
My playing partners today were Sharon Anderson & Bev Adams. Sharon was the star of our group & we did have some good highlights with Sharon parring three of the Par 3 holes. We had 20 odd players who did not play due to the course conditions which reduced our Championship field substantially.
The Event of the day was Round 1 of the Ladies 2010 Championship - 72 Holes Stroke Event.
We had 44 starters (due to the bad weather).

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Sheena Asken & Wendy Stapleton's highlights were playing with Michelle McGrath (Toth); Michelle McGrath (Toth) birdied the first 3 holes and the 18th almost in the hole for an eagle), scoring 38 on the front 9 and 44 on the back; Lyn Douglas & Marie Gledhill's highlights were bringing in the nett winner Di Thomlinson (nett 71); Anne Burke had 46 strokes on the front 9; Lyn Bates got her buggy bogged on the 13th but was saved by brute strength from Judy Ruitenberg; Maggie Minjoy parred the 5th; Yvonne Cumming sank a gobbler from 20 foot at the 12th; Dawn Cook had a gobbler at the 9th; Lorraine Bignall parred the 14th; Bev Adams parred the 15th; Sharon Anderson played a steady game parring 3 out of the 4 Par 3's; Kath Small had a par on the 6th; my highlight of the day was getting out of jail on the 1st with a chip close to the pin from the top of the bunker and at the 1st hole and at the 15th my second shot across the left hand bunkers, missed all of the trees to land on a grassy spot on the mounds behind the bunkers & followed that up with a good chip close to the pin on the 15th.
It was pretty miserable out there at times and congratulations should go to all those players that started and finished. I have to say one of my highlights was finishing as I am not fond of wet weather golf.
The Pro Shop has taken further shape with the plasterer (Ronnie Johnston - Julie Hazzard's son) doing a great job of forming up the walls leading into the Member's Bar. (Photo attached)
