F-Trooper Ron Gowing cleaning up the 1st and 10th Tees

After some good rainfall overnight and early morning we did get some volunteers to turn up to work on our projects.

On hand were Duncan Dyer, Trevor Harrison, Kevin O'Brien, Andy Henebury, Ron Gowing, Peter Martin, Di Beechey.

Projects worked on today were removal of a dead tree on the 9th fairway, trimming of the Lilly Pilly tree on the 10th fairway, painting of the toilet doors at the bush toilets, clubhouse maintenance in the links room, cleaning up around the clubhouse, wedding garden, 1st and 10th tees and the practice nets.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Future postings may be spasmodic as I am off swanning around Japan as one does.  I am not taking my trusty laptop this time as we have a very busy schedule with limited free wifi and as well I will not have my luggage boy travelling with me this time to help out. Perhaps a big catch up when I get home.  Meanwhile - Happy Golfing!

For quite a few years our St Patrick's Day has traditionally been washed out, but not today. We enjoyed a lovely cool early morning starting with an 8am shotgun start.

My playing partners were Alice Diamond, Annette Cross & Carolyn Buttsworth and we had a fun day working our way through the jokers day scoring where we each were given either a heart, spade, diamond or club status and scored accordingly for the team event.  We had some good highlights, the best of which were coming in 3rd place in the Team Event.

The Golf Event of the day was played as a Stableford Game, but it was all about the team results so there was no handicapping or singles results.  The girls looked resplendent in their choices of green or orange . The name of the game was "Joker Day" which I now understand after playing the game.

We had 84 starters.

RESULTS:

WINNERS: Jann Henebury, Dawn Tromp, Jan Fitzgerald & Bev Adams.

RUNNER UP: Norma Wilks, Lynn Puiatti, Kay Frewin & Lauren Matterson

3RD: Jan Martin, Alice Diamond, Annette Cross & Carolyn Buttsworth

WOODEN SPOONERS: Doreen Trigg, Helen Smith, Tania Walklate & Midge Gill

We were happy to see Shirley Daly who travelled from Sydney today with her daughter Natasha to say hello to all the girls. It was great to catch up Shirley!

I think a good day was had by all.

Carolyn Buttsworth - Nearest the Pin - 8th Hole
Stuart Williams (Runner Up Men's Singles),
Jan Walker - Ball Winner - 3rd Place Ladies Singles

With Jan Walker & Neville Walker at the 1st Tee

It was with some trepidation that we made a decision to play golf today with the predicted 40 degree day looming with no change in the forecast.  Lucky that we did because the day, although reaching the high heat, was pacified by a nice breeze that kept the temperature bearable enough to get in 18 holes.  Our playing partners were Neville & Jan Walker who were great company and kept cheerful all day and we did enjoy some good highlights with Jan scoring 4 x 3 pointers and Neville 3 x 3 pointers on the back 9.  Both Jan & Neville won a ball each so the day was worthwhile.

The Golf Event of the day was a Single Stableford for Men and Women.

We had 41 starters.

RESULTS:

MEN'S SINGLES RESULTS:

WINNER: Chris Fuller - 42 points

RUNNER UP: Stu Williams - 41 points

BALLS WENT TO:

DSR LADIES: 72

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Jan Walker had 4 x 3 pointers including two 3 pointers in a row; Neville Walker had 3x 3 pointers on the back 9; Carolyn Buttsworth hit a great drive to the 8th green to win nearest the pin; Kevin O'Brien had two pars; Carolyn & Ray Buttsworth were both putting for a par on the 18th hole; Mark Stimpson had birdies on the 2nd and 16th; Helen Potter had 23 points on the front 9; Keith Potter birdied the 3rd hole with a slam dunk chip into the hole; Alice Diamond had 2 pars on the 11th and the 6th; my highlight I think was playing with the ball winners but I was happy with my pitching shot to the 10th green where I scored a 3 pointer.

Nelson Bay Report 2018

Nelson Bay Trip 2018

Twenty seven keen and mostly able golfers set out for their annual trip to the northern seaside village of Nelson Bay.
The first stop on Monday was Newcastle Golf Course, the golf was ordinary with the winner posting a credible 34 and the last placegetter a miserly 19 points. The course was in splendid condition and was enjoyed by most. On to the digs a Cote d’Azure in the heart of Nelson.

Winner Michael Callaghan 34
Tuesday the first meeting with golf resort Horizons. Golf did improve and with the marvellous weather a great day was had by all.

Winner Garry Fitch 39

Wednesday was the traditional lay-day with eight golfers setting sail for Hawks Nest golf course whilst the others looked after the financial interests of the touring party though a cunning betting syndicate. A healthy dividend was paid at the end of the day and all that participated smiled the winning grin.

Nearest to the pin winner Eddie Rogers $152.00 which he generously shared with his playing partners. The boat trip back was magic.

Thursday, day two at Horizons and again the weather gods where on the golfers side. Great golf, well I exaggerate a little but that is what golfers do.

Winner Tony Woods 34

Friday, Championship day. The lead group were the golfers with the least amount of points after 3 days and the last group the potential winners of the John Bullivant TrophyWhilst the prize money is slightly less than the Majors the golf was just as intense.

The winner on the day was the “old” stalwart Duncan Dyer. But the winner for the overall honour of holding the Trophy aloft was Garry Fitch with in close second the evergreen Gary Sammons.
Whilst some had a less successful tour than others I am sure that there were no losers.
We all extend our best wishes to Greg Thompson who had an accident just before the tour and was unable to attend. We hope you recover quickly, all the best “Bluey”.

The whole group I am sure would like the thank Garry Buggy and Ross Bryant for their marvellous organisation of this annual event.

My thanks to Paul Scholberg for this report.

With Gary & Helen Smith at the 1st Tee

We had a fantastic day for golf today on the Village Green. Blue sky and sunshine and not too hot.
Our playing partners were Gary and Helen Smith who blew the field away today, winning the team event, the Men's Singles and the Ladies Singles - all due of course to the good company that they had. We had many highlights the best of which was Gary's 4 pointer on the 3rd and the other seven 3 pointers he had.

The Golf Event of the day was a Medley 2 Ball + Single Stableford for Men and Women.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: We were one on the last lot of groups to come in today so I did not have time to do my usual interviews around the tables, but let's face it the Smith's have taken out most of the highlights today which one may think was attributed to the company they had on the day - Gary Smith had a 4 pointer on the 4th and 3 pointers at the 4/5/10/14/16/17/18th ( no wonder we lost the keno ticket); Helen Smith had some nice 3 pointers at the 10/12 and 14th; The Runners up in the Team Event - Kevin O'Brien had a chip in for birdie at the 4th and a birdie at the 8th and Lorraine Bignall had a nice birdie on the 5th after a good drive to the green; my highlight was finishing with the same ball I started with, two 3 pointers in a row at the 8th and 9th.
