Thursday 22nd January 2009

It was planting of the Blue Ice Conifers Day today as I did not want to leave the trees in pots during hot weather while I will be away. Martin Gallagher agreed to help me plant out and water in the trees. The timing was perfect after this big rain storm we had last night. I believe we received something like two inches of rain which was wonderful for the fairways and not to mention the topping up of the dams. Another couple of repeats of that storm would be appropriate followed by some nice slow drizzle - perfect!
The camphor Laurel tree that was crowding the trees along the dam has been removed & the rest of this garden area has our priority.
The purchase of these trees was made possible by the generous donation received from Nigel & Sheena Asken who have donated towards our garden projects. Another tree purchased was the "Little Gem" Magnolia Tree that has been placed near the front entry to the 1st and 10th tees. Thank you Sheena & Nigel. I hope you enjoy watching these trees grow to maturity for everyone to enjoy. The rest of this garden area is ear marked for refreshment - this work will be carried out as soon as our work program and finances will allow. Watch this space for reports of new work.
Other donations that I know of this week have been for the purchase of Chinese Box plants for the 6th tee area. Generous donations have been received from Bert Brink, Renee Dekker & Clyde Cruickshanks for this purpose & our sincere thanks go to them.
We plan on having a F-Troop notice board placed somewhere at the front area of the club on which we will place a selection list of all the plants that are required to complete our garden projects. Anyone wishing to donate towards our projects can select which of the plants/shrubs/trees they would like to give support to. We will also be placing F-Troop news there to keep everyone up to date with our projects.

F-Troop - Monday 19th January 2009

We certainly did a lot of cleaning up around the course today with F-Troopers involved in tree trimming, tree removal, clearing along the fairways, rubbish removal & timber cutting, placing of new hazard stakes on the 17th, weeding of the putting green edging, magnolia garden, putting green rear garden & front gardens, raking & picking up of loose timber & bark at the front entrance, around the wedding garden and first tee areas, rough cutting and watering of gardens at the front of the club, 18th green gardens and camelias & new grass gardens.
They were jobs all well done by the F-Troopers involved. Those that I saw today were Martin Gallagher, Clyde Cruickshanks, Duncan Dyer, Des Wilson, George Foster, Doug Incoll, Arthur Verlander, Bert Brink, Garry Trigg, Yvonne Wilson, Anne Burgess and Robin Incoll. I appologise if I have missed anyone - I was a late arrival today and worked away from the mainsteam work so it is quite possible that someone else was there that I have not remembered. It was quite hot by the middle of the day - so jobs well done troopers! Keep up the good work while I am away!
Images attached: Removal of a camphor Laurel tree at the 12th green; new hazard markers at the 17th; Doug Incoll trimming azaleas at the putting green garden; Robin Incoll weeding and mulching at the putting green garden; Des & Yvonne Wilson working at the front gardens; Doug Incoll clearing & mulching at the putting green garden; Robin Incoll watering the Mondo Grass area at the practice nets.
THIS MAY BE THE LAST BLOG REPORT FOR A FEW WEEKS AS I AM ONLY HOME FOR ONE DAY IN THE NEXT THREE WEEKS - SO STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT EXCITING REPORT ( WHENEVER THAT MAY HAPPEN TO BE).

Golf - Tuesday 13th January 2009

The weather was quite hot but that did not stop some of our good golfers coming with great scores. My partner today was Judy Verlander. Our golf scores were not fantastic but the company was good. We made good time around the course & were happy to get into the airconditioning at the clubhouse after the event. I was not able to stay long enough for presentation so I have no photos of the winner for today.
My appologies for the late publishing of the blog this week. I have had places to go & things to do this week which included two nights at the Crown Plaza Hunter Valley and golf at Kooindah Waters & Crown Plaza Hunter Valley. Life is full of priorities as we all know.....and somebody has to do it! This will be happening again shortly when I go to Riverside Oaks next week for two days and Byron Bay for two weeks at the end of next week. The results will be published ASAP.
The Event of the day today was a Single Stableford. We had 62 starters with 3 visitors from Muswellbrook, Terrigal and Tuggerah.

The latest news on the water situation as I understand it is that we can get Bore Water from the Council. It does have some salt content, but that can be treated - so it is looking a lot more promising that our water situation can get under control.

F- Troop - Monday 12th January 2009

We had another very successful "F-Troop" day today getting a lot of work done around the course. Led by Martin Gallagher today the troops did some tree trimming, loose timber and rubbish pickup & removal, raking, planting of new native and Mondo grasses recently donated to the club. We had about 15 workers & those that I saw were Martin Gallagher, Peter Martin, Garry Trigg, Gary Sammons, John Coddington, Peter Murphy, Geoff Bridge, Warren Gray, Arthur Verlander, Di Beechey, Anne Burgess, Yvonne Wilson, Des Wilson & Noel Fenning.
The rough cutters were out of action today so Garry Trigg applied himself as a good raker & cleaner around the course helping Peter Martin pickup with the tractor.
Yvonne Wilson pruned & deadheaded the Hydrangeas on the 3rd tee.
John Coddington arrived late and was immediately put on the job of digging in the grasses with me on the path leading to the practice nets and under the trees nearby. John did a fantastic job & with the help of Di Beechey we managed to get all the grasses in place & watered in by morning tea. A task that I thought would be impossible judging by the amount of grass we had to deal with. Di & I planted a little more of the Mondo grass on the second tee after morning tea & that dealt with all of the grass.
I had earlier planted the "Little Gem" Magnolia in the small garden near the entrance path to the first tee. It will grow beautifully there & is just about to come into flower (Large white flowers).
Anne Burgess watered the bourganvilleas at the back of the 10th.
Later I finished trimming , fertilizing & watering the azaleas in the front car park.
I did not get out to the rest of the course until later but I believe that there was some cleaning up done on the 6th and some tree trimming done around the course.
The promised "King Tide" was not as big as I had anticipated. The gardens at the 15th were still intact with no water damage & the tide was going back out at 12.30pm.
We had a look at the new watering system from the Council Bore which is to be fed into the 3rd dam. When I left today it was all hooked up and ready to go - so I hope we have some water happening in the 3rd dam tomorrow if all went well. (photos attached).

Golf - Sunday 11th January 2009

Today was a great day for golf ( for some). The weather was hot - but a little bit of breeze helped along the way. We had an enjoyable day with Vicky & Bob Morris even though the boys gave us a golf lesson - Bob coming in with 44 points and Peter with 38 points. It is always good to bring home the winner.
As most people are aware we have a huge water crisis happening at our course whereby the Narara Creek - during high tide - has back washed into our dam on the 13th causing our water supply to be salt affected. This in turn has browned off all of our fairways.
The only solution it seemed was to pump/drain the dams back into the creek & pray for rain. We have all been in panic mode as our course has been in it's best state for many years & this was a catostrophe. We only had a few days water supply left with at least another two months of hot weather ahead.
President Ron Puiatti was able to negotiate with the local Council and to the credit of the Council Employees and in particular to the Mayor Chris Holstein we have been rescued by the Council making available to us some water from the bore water outlet that is near our 18th tee.
We take out hats off to Chris Holstein for his time & effort he has taken to try & get things right for us. We are hoping for enough water to carry us through this crisis until natural rain kicks in.
It is raining tonight as I write this blog (prayers are being heard) & we hope the gardens and grounds get a good soaking to see us through until the dams are filled.
There is a "King Tide" due tomorrow that will test out all the theories on how we can keep the creek water from back filling into our dams. I will keep you posted on the results.
The Event of the day was a Single Stableford + Team 1 x 2 x 3 mixed Men and Ladies.
We had 116 starters with 3 visitors from Everglades and Tuggerah Lakes.

( he tells me that he can smell the single figure handicap now); Peter Martin had a birdie on the 16th for 3/4 (so my three pointer did not count for the team effort, being a one score to count hole); my highlight was a 4/3 gobbler off the green on the 16th; Vicky Morris had a nice three pointer on the 5th; Sharon Anderson had a great 42 points, getting 3 four pointers on 4th, 7th and 10th; Keith Morris had a four pointer on the 2nd; Ron Dekker had a four pointer - I was told his turning score was claimed to be 23 - however should have been 22 (not bad anyway); Robyn Johnston had a birdie on the 8th; Wally Johnston had a birdie on the 14th; Bruce Binns had three birdies on the back nine 3/4 on the 13th, 4/3 on the 18th and 4/3 on the 10th; Wally Robertson doubled his score from his last game; Judy Mulheron had 4/4 gobbler on the first; Michael Norman had 2/4 on the 8th; Warren Flanigan had 2/4 on the 12th and won nearest the pin; Ray Stapleton had 3/5 on the 4th; Jan Walker had a nice 40 points; Elly Van Den Berg had 4/4 par on the 1st and 2/5 birdie on the 8th and won nearest the pin; Annie brink had a very Happy Birthday and got 37 points including a 4 pointer on the 15th.
Other news reported to me: Ray Presdee scored an Eagle on the 16th at golf on Saturday. Immediately after he sank the putt the " Channel 7 News Helicopter" flew overhead. News travels very quickly apparently.
I was not able to get to the club this week to get the results for Thursday, Friday & Saturday - Sorry about that! I will endeavour to get hold of the results as often as possible to publish them on the blog.

The story goes that George & Ron conspired to defeat the ladies for the Keno ticket by agreeing to wear their matching purple shirts for luck - however they did not tell Clyde; The "club" vote on the shirts;
Annie brink's birthday cake & blowing out the candles; Ron Dekker received his long awaited "F-Troop" shirt tonight & could not wait to show it off.

We had 37 brave starters on this very hot 35 degree day. That did not stop some of our good players who came in with great scores regardless of the heat. Thanks to Wendy Stapleton who carted around some ice to help out the players in stress. It worked for me - I got a birdie on the hole that I was playing after the extra cool down.
My playing partners today were Yvonne Wilson & Doreen Vines. We had a good day with some really fantastic highlights including birdies and four pointers. No photo unfortunately as we could not find a spare photographer at the time.

F-Troop Monday 5th January 2009

I never cease to wonder on the generousity of our Members towards our F-Troop projects. We have received so much help with both donations of time ( a scarce commodity at this time of the year), cash and plant donations. I have been so impressed and today was no exception.

We had nineteen troopers that I saw today volunteering their time on such a hot day which helped us to achieve so much around the course. Today I saw Duncan Dyer, Rosalie Dyer, Martin Gallagher, Neil Hancock, Geoff Bridge, Warren Gray, Mark Stimpson, Des Wilson, Yvonne Wilson, Arthur Verlander, Peter Martin, Doug Incoll, Robin Incoll, Garry Trigg, Bruce White, John Cottington, George Foster, Di Beechey all working very hard in all the heat.

We received a very generous donation of Native grasses from Matt Snelson which included 100 Tanika grasses which we wanted for behind the bunker on the left hand side of the 17th green.

We also received a cash donation from Sheena & Nigel Asken for future work to be done at the 12th green. How good is that!

Matt delivered the plants today which meant we needed to plant the smaller plants straight away. Without hesitation I had Arthur Verlander & Peter on side for hole digging duties which was done very efficiently with great difficulty as we lacked all the correct tools for the job. Special thanks to Peter & Arthur for that hard toiling. The rest of the crew caught up later & helped with the planting and watering. We had 100 plants - so a job well done troopers.

Other work done today was cleaning, raking and watering at the club entrance by Di Beechey, clearing & weeding at the back of the 10th tee and Magnolia garden by Rosalie Dyer, weeding, watering at the 14th & 15th by Yvonne & Des Wilson, fertilizing, watering & mulching of the Azalia/Hydrangea garden by Doug & Robin Incoll, cutting down trees & removal of rubbish from the 2nd fairway by the F-Troop gang & general removal of loose timber and raking around the course, cutting of low branches of trees on the 4th, rough cutting by Garry Trigg (our other rough cutter was out of action today - so Ray Presdee got to have a holiday), watering of the plants in the Ladies Garden on the 13th, trimming azaleas in the front parking area, spraying and dead heading the roses on the putting green.

A fantastic effort today F-Troopers.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
