F-Troop Monday 1st June 2009

There was no golf on Sunday as the course was too wet. The course has been saturated with rain with supposivly more to come. It is so wet that mushrooms are happily popping out on the course. (see photo attached)
The course was open for play today. Those that played said it was okay for play but very wet underfoot. The planned Sponsers Day was cancelled so there were not too many players out on the course. I suppose by comparison of how it would have been some years back when the course was closed for a week at a time.
It was very sloshy so no machinery or trucks were allowed on the course. Because of this F-Troop was cancelled for the day.
As there were jobs to be done that did not require trucks or machinery a few F-Troopers that reported for duty cleared the blocked drains at the 13th dam & wherever they could find a problem.
It was a perfect day for planting trees so we finished off the planting of the avenue of Tibouchinas on the 2nd fairway & also planted a Golden Penda at the back of the tempory green on the second which is the next area marked for clean up and refurbishment.
The Daintree Pine on the 15th was showing signs of animal attack as the bottom leaves appeared to be chewed. The rest of the tree seems fine so some fertilizer & some TLC should bring it around. Perhaps a protective fence may be appropriate while the tree is young & close to the ground.
We have received a donation of two tree ferns so I needed to create a place for them. Today we created two new garden spots at the Ladies 2nd tee to accommodate the tree ferns.
F- Troopers today were Duncan Dyer, Martin Gallagher, Noel Fenning, Garry Trigg and Peter Martin. Many thanks for a job well done.

F-Troop Monday 25th May 2009

The wild, wet weather always shows up the weakness of our trees as we could see by all the large ( & small) branches that were brought down this last week all over the course. It also shows up the weakness in the drainage systems when the water will not drain away.
We had a tragedy at the new garden area where one of the weak branches fell down onto the garden bench and destroyed it - so we are looking for three garden benches now. Thankfully nobody was sitting on the seat at the time!
F-Troopers had to work hard today on damaged and dangerous trees, picking up loose timber and checking drains. Some of the drains were full of tree roots which is why we need to be very selective when replacing trees on the course. As well as being tidy growers the root systems are extremely important. There was a lot of raking to be done & plants to be planted in gardens.
F-Troopers that I saw today were Clyde Cruickshanks, Arthur Verlander, Des Wilson, Yvonne Wilson, Jan Walker, Duncan Dyer, Garry Trigg, Peter Murphy, Mark Stimpson, Spencer Walklate, Warren Gray, Bert Brink and Martin Gallagher. I did not get past the front of the club today as there was so much work to do there - so I did not see the work done out on the course - so I am sorry if I missed anybody.
Clyde Cruickshanks and Arthur Verlander spread out the pine mulch on the new garden & tidied up the area for the new table & chairs. Des Wilson & Bert Brink were on drainage inspections and the rest of the boys were on tree inspections, removal and timber pickup. Jan Walker did a great job raking up at the 18th, 3rd, & 5th. Yvonne Wilson helped me plant some succulents in the new garden & planted some new grasses on the 6th garden with help from Des.
Wayne Tomkinson delivered his promised garden flowers which I promptly planted in the Magnolia garden and the Centre garden between the 1st and the 10th tees. Many thanks to Wayne for these lovely healthy plants which will give that area a colourful lift.
We have been getting a lot of compliments on the presentation of the course so we must be doing something right!
YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Sunday 24th May 2009

Who would have believed that we would have such a fantastic day for golf that we had today. After all the wind and rain that has fallen on our village green this week we could have been forgiven for thinking that the track would not be too good today. WRONG! The day was perfect and the course was in great condition considering the weather that is has had to withstand. There were some bunkers out of play and a few puddles here and there but overall it was really fantastic to be out there. Quite a difference from years back when the course would have been unsuitable for play for days on end. We hope that all the Members remember those days and appreciate the work that has been but into the course to improve the drainage and other problems that have plagued us for many years.

There was a lot of loose timber on the course today caused by the bad weather so we are calling on all our F-Troop volunteers to be out tomorrow to help our regulars with timber pick up along with other maintenance work that is required. Meet at the Greenkeepers Shed at 7.15 am or report to the new garden area at the Practice Nets if you cannot come early. We have lots of work to be done!

I feel compelled to comment on the loss of the Orchid Flowers on the 14th near the Bush Toilets.
The Orchid Plants themselves have remained untouched (so far) so we are hoping for more flowers in the future. We could have all appreciated the flowers for the next few months had they been left in their rightful place.

These orchids were donated by Bert and Ronda Jordon, planted by F-Troop and have been adopted by Yvonne Wilson. Yvonne has spent much of her time caring for these orchids which had produced beautiful flowers this year thanks to her care. (photo attached). I would like to think that none of our Members would be responsible for the theft of these flowers as we get such a positive response from the majority of people that play this course both Members and Non-Members and visitors from other areas. It is sad to think that there are people out there that feel comfortable with themselves after doing something like that.
We will not be deterred by this one violation and will press on with more garden enhancement projects and I take this opportunity to thank all the Members who have come forward with donations towards this cause & we (F-Troop) plan to reward you with some sensational displays towards the spring of 2009. The most recent of the donations being pansies and dianthus for the Magnolia garden donated by Wayne Tomkinson - Thanks Wayne!

The weather has closed in so water wings may be required over the next few days. The course has received a good drenching and the dams are full which will be good in the long run.

All going well we will be able to do an F-Troop cleanup on Monday for fallen branches etc so we are looking for a good turn up of volunteers next Monday.

F- Troop Monday 18th May 2009

We were down on numbers for our F-Troop work today only having eight of us to spread around the chores. We did manage to achieve an amazing amount all the same.

Clyde Cruickshanks, Arthur Verlander, Noel Fenning, Geoff Bridge, Spencer Walklate, Warren Gray & Peter Martin managed to finish concreting in the rocks at the new garden, remove the tree stump and level up the new seating area. It was all heavy work and a job well done by our troopers. We also did some rubbish removal, raking & cleaning up at the front of the clubhouse, turned over the soil and seasoled the Magnolia garden in preparation for some new pansies which are coming next week, watered the new ground covers & the new garden, the garden behind the putting green and the row of Tibouchinas newly planted on the 2nd fairway, sprayed & trimmed the roses.

It was a Charity Golf Day today so there were a lot of players out on the course which meant we were better confined to an area that did not interfere with play.

Next week we will have a lot of loose timber to pick up after the windy day on Saturday caused some havoc with loose branches. This week we received some very generous donations towards our new garden which will enable us to make some more forward progress with the completion of this area. I did notice that some of our orchids that were planted on the 14th and the 18th are starting to flower which is a good sign that they are happy in their new homes.

Golf - Sunday 17th May 2009

It is not often that I get to play golf with my brother Graham and his lovely wife Anne so it was a special to be out on the course on such a great weather day & find the course in such good condition. It was a pleasure to be out on the course, so much so that the scores did not really matter. We did have some highlights with Graham scoring two four pointers & Peter getting a birdie. The boys played well and won the keno ticket. My highlight was winning a ball which I have not done for such a long time.

Golf - Tuesday 12th May 2009

It was a magnificent day for golf today and the course was in great condition.

We had 160 starters with visitors from Beresfield, Terrigal, Randwick, Tuggerah Lakes, Magenta Shores, Belmont, Toronto, Everglades, Wyong, Merewether, Asquith, Tallwoods and Mangrove Mountain.
It was a very successful day with a good representation for our Open Day. The Committee girls are to be complimented for their hard work in putting this day together so well.
My playing parters today were Maggie Minjoy, Sue Suters and Margaret Nichols. We had a lovely day if not a lovely score and we had plenty of highlights not the least of which was a succesful keno ticket after the match. The 19th hole was a very congenial place today with a lot of our members and guests staying back for the Presentation which is a sign of a good day.
