Well, so much for the clearing showers!

I just looked out the window and saw a glimpse of sunshine......Let us hope that is a good sign for tomorrow!

The non stop showers and rain today was discouraging for golf. Better luck next week boys!

Golf -Tuesday 27th January 2015

We had a lot of rain today and along with the wet weather yesterday was enough to discourage any Lady Golfers due to play today.

I understand tomorrow's forecast will be an improvement in the weather - cloudy with occasional light showers.  The heavy rain is contracting to the North so we should be right for golf tomorrow.

The Golf Event of the day was a non event today - nobody was too keen after all the rain.

Surprisingly the course was in pretty good order considering how much rain we have had.

Golfers who did play socially today said it was good enough to play.

F-Troop - Monday 19th January 2014

F-Troop was a non event today due to the persistent rain.  We have had a huge lot of rain (108mm) so we would not have been able to work on the course even if the rain stopped.

We have, however, projects that we can do off the course but the non-stop rain put an end to that.

We did have some die hards turn up at 7.00am just in case we could get something done. We had Duncan Dyer, Trevor Harrison, Geoff Bridge, Rob Benson, Peter Martin and Jan Martin waiting for a patch of blue sky which unfortunately dud not come.

On a positive side our dams are totally full, the fairways and gardens have had a good soaking. We will have to have a catch up next week.

WARNING!!!!  It is Bunya Pine falling time.

We have got a bunch of Bunya Pines (protected trees) at the 16th and 17th fairways.

You may have noticed warning signs attached to the trees that advise you of the danger of these falling pine cones.

These warning signs should be taken seriously as these pine cones will fall without warning from the trees weighing upwards of two kilos with sharp thorns that could be fatal if you should be unfortunate enough to be in the path of the fall.  Please be cautious when searching for your golf ball in these areas.

I have been on the fairway when these cones have fallen and could feel the ground shake! They come down with a great thump.

We had a lovely day for golf today - not nearly as hot as yesterday and luckily a small breeze to keep the heat at bay.  Our playing partners were Michael and Pauline Norman and we had a good day on the village green.  The boys beat the girls for the Keno ticket on the 18th after the girls were two up at half way.

F-Troop Morning Tea - Rob Benson, Princess Emily Martin, Peter Martin, Garry Trigg, Geoff Bridge,
Di Beechey, Anne Burgess, Trevor Harrison, Don Nicholls, Warren Gray, Duncan Dyer, Mark Stimpson
(Jan Martin)

Watch this space for some upcoming improvements

We had a cool and showery day this morning but it was not enough to stop our projects from going ahead.

We had eleven volunteers which was a great number to share the pick up load after some windy days.

On hand we had Duncan Dyer, Trevor Harrison, Don Nicholls, Peter Martin, Geoff Bridge, Warren Gray, Garry Trigg, Rob Benson, Di Beechey, Anne Burgess and Jan Martin.

The tree gang of Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Trevor Harrison and Garry Trigg were kept busy all morning starting with cutting up two large fallen branches at the putting green garden and the 1st Tee and then moving on to the 5th tee and trimming the liquid Amber trees at the 11th. Eight trailer loads of cuttings were taken to the dump.

Rob Benson and Warren Gray made some good inroads in rubbish pick up around the course and then worked on fence repairs at the 18th. Two ute loads of rubbish were taken to the dump.

Peter Martin and Don Nicholls cleaned up at the back of the clubhouse, raking and picking up rubbish, cleaned up at the 18th green, picked up rubbish from the front street garden and worked on fence repairs at the 17th.

Di Beechey and Anne Burgess cleaned up the front and back car parks, the BBQ garden, underneath the clubhouse, the garden at the 2nd green and tidied up the storage room in the clubhouse.

I cleaned up at the Bush Toilets, fertilised the Orange Trumpet Vines at the 14th Tee, tidied up at the 6th tee, tidied up at the Ladies 3rd Tee, tidied up the garden at the school front fence, added potting mix and fertilised the big pots in the wedding garden, fertilised the other pots at the putting green, weeded the front garden near the pots, weeded the garden at the water bubbler at the 1st and 10th.

Scones, jam and cream, topped up with some pro shop sausage rolls for morning tea was appreciated.  Thank you Chef Alice!

The recent nice slow rain has been great for the course and gardens, the dams are topped up and there was no damage done to bunkers or greens because the rain was not heavy.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Sunday 11th January 2015

At last, some nice gentle, steady rain that will revitalise our course and gardens.  A pity that it had to rain on our social Sunday leaving us at a loss of what to do on a wet day.

The Pennants golf went ahead with the rain slow but steady.  The greens were fine so the golf could go ahead.  We had a few players out there including would-have-been competition players and some keen social players.

To give you something to read I am featuring the Rhinoceros Beetle after getting some photos through from John and Julie Hazzard.  I have never seen a Rhinoceros Beetle so here is some information for those who have never seen them either:

Scientific name: Subfamily Dynastinae

Description:,Rhinoceros beetles are herbivorous insects named for the horn-like projections on and around the heads of males. Most are black, Gray, or greenish in colour, and some covered in soft hairs.

Another name given to some of these insects is Hercules beetles, because they possess strength of a Herculean proportion.

Adults in some species can lift objects 850 times their weight! That would be equivalent to a human lifting 9 fully grown male elephants! One of the uses for extreme strength is for the beetles to dig themselves into leaf litter and soil to escape danger. Their horns also help them to do this.

Size: Rhinoceros beetles can grow up to 6 inches, making them some of the largest beetles around.

Diet: All Rhinoceros beetles are herbivorous.  The adults feed on fruit, nectar and sap. The larvae eat decaying plant matter.

Typical Lifespan: longevity varies among species, but typical lifespan is one to two years. Much of this may be spent in larval stage.

Habitat: Leaf litter, plants and fallen logs provide a safe hideout for Rhinoceros beetles during the day.

Range: Rhinoceros beetles can be found on every continent except Antartica.

Fun Fact: when disturbed, Rhinoceros beetles can produce hissing squeeks. These are not actually vocal noises. Instead, they are produced when rubs their abdomen and wing covers together.

For more information you can look up the National Wild Life Fedation on the web where I found these details.

I know you will all be thrilled with this information, but it does fill in a wet day!!!!!

My thanks to John and Julie Hazzard for sending me some photos.

The Golf Event of the day was a Ladies Ball Competition for those keen enough to turn up at 7am. In addition to that we had Social Golf which has proved very popular over the holidays.

We have been lucky enough to have great weather for golf, a little on the hot side but blue sky and Sunshine which is a big improvement on torrential rain.

We could do with some nice steady rain (outside of golfing hours) to protect our water supply and keep our gardens and fairways maintained.

F-Troop Morning Tea - Jan Martin, Geoff Bridge, Anne Burgess, Di Beechey, Warren Gray,
Rob Benson, Garry Trigg, Trevor Harrison, Don Nicholls, Peter Martin, Duncan Dyer

Action at the 5th Fairway - the hump on the left side of the approach to the green has been flattened out and an area cleared for a new pathway to the 6th Tee. We will now have a clear shot to the bunker!!!

F-Troopers Trevor Harrison and Peter Martin picking up garden rubbish at the 2nd Tee
after the shrubs had been trimmed and the garden weeded.

We were hopeful of more rain overnight but unfortunately we did not get very much at all.

We had eleven volunteers today which was great as we had a lot of projects on hand.

Workers today were Trevor Harrison, Don Nicholls, Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Garry Trigg, Warren Gray, Rob Benson, Peter Martin, Di Beechey, Anne Burgess and Jan Martin.

The Tree Gang - Duncan Dyer, Trevor Harrison, Geoff Bridge and Garry Trigg worked at the 5th fairway where the green staff are changing the fairway and path to the 6th Tee. You will note that the left lump on the creek side has been flattened out so we will now have a clear view of our golf balls going into the left bunker.

Warren Gray and Rob Benson did rubbish pick up around the course and then did some more repair work on the fence at the 18th fairway.

Peter Martin and Don Nicolls put a new tap at the 14th Bush Toilets, raked up the 7th Tee, picked up rubbish around the course, did some repair work on the fence on the 18th fairway, fixed a door lock in the associates room, raked up at the back of the clubhouse.

Di Beechey cleaned up underneath the clubhouse, watered the gardens at the 1st and 10th, maintained the water feature on the 1st, cleaned up in the storeroom.

Anne Burgess worked on cleaning up the BBQ area and the daunting task of the car park area.

I worked at the 3rd Ladies Tee, secured the golf shoes and planted 4 new succulents in the garden at the 2nd Green, tidied up the 6th tranquility garden, cleaned up the 14th Bush Toilets and watered the gardens there, trimmed the shrubs in the garden at the Men's 2nd Tee and weeded the garden, partly weeded the garden at the new cart shed, watered the pots in the Wedding Garden.

Morning Tea was very welcome and we enjoyed iced cake slices Thank you Chef Alice!

After morning tea Peter and Trevor repaired a sign at the 17th and picked up garden rubbish from where I was working at the 2nd Tee.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

This is just some of John and Julie Hazzard's grandchildren enjoying some quality time over Christmas!

We had a very hot day to contend with today - thankfully there was some breeze to keep the temperature down but we were busy looking for shady spots to stand in. It was one of the few days we did not mind having some handy shade trees.

Our playing partners were Duncan and Rosalie Dyer and we had some good highlights throughout the day.  The boys beat the girls for the Keno ticket after the girls being one up at the halfway. Rosalie was our champion today, being pipped on a runner up place on a count back.

The Golf Event of the day was a Single Event for Men and Ladies.

We had 56 starters with one visitor from Randwick.

Allan Parsons - 1938 to 2015

Sadly Allan Parsons passed away yesterday after a long illness.  Allan was a past Secretary/Manager of the Gosford Golf Club and a long time Member of the Club. In addition to golf he was a great supporter and Member of the Narara/Wyoming Cricket Club where he was honoured with Life Membership.

At this time I do not have any details for the funeral arrangements.  When this information comes to hand I will add it to the Blog.

Golf - Friday 2nd January 2014

Today we had a magnificent day for golf which kept all of our social golfers happy.

I understand that our carts all went out twice during the day which means we had a good steady stream of golfers enjoying our great course.

We did not have a Raffle and Members draw tonight due to our regular supporters being in holiday mode.

There were still some our die hards at the club for dinner and a good crowd of after golf players who were enjoying the club facilities.

Social golf will continue on into next week and then we will be back to regular competition days.

Note for Members and Guests:

Saturday 7th February 2014 is the date for the Annual Presentation Night of Trophies for all of our exceptional players. Put this date into your social calendar so you can come along and support our champions and trophy winners and hopefully you are one of them. All Golfing Members will receive a free dinner and guests may attend at $35 per head.  There is going to be entertainment following presentation so get your tables organised and booked for a great night.

We are looking forward to seeing our club packed to the rafters for this special event!
