F-Troop - Monday 27th April 2009

After a very uncomfortable windy Sunday we were lucky to get some starters for F-Troop this morning. We had fourteen hardy souls turn up for duty & they worked hard to clear the fallen branches after the wind, rough cutting, raking untidy areas and working on the gardens.
I buried myself on the new garden area today and only saw those that put in an appearance there. If I have missed anyone - I do appologise.
Arthur Verlander did a shift on the rough cutter; Duncan Dyer, Warren Gray, Spencer Walklate, and Geoff Bridges were on timber pickup; Anne Burgess & Judy Hughes did some gardening work at the back of the 10th green; Jan Walker cleaned up at the course entry & the putting green; Yvonne Wilson did some gardening on the 14th; Clyde Cruickshanks, Ron Dekker and Peter Martin worked on the new garden; Di Beechey helped around the new garden.
We made some good inroads at the new garden with all the gravel now in place on the path & seating area. The seating area is complete bar the garden seats. Some of the bark is in place and most of the garden soil has been spread with manure & well watered in. The camelias have been planted and also the ground cover plants underneath the Tibouchina tree.
We still have to set the rocks into place & plan out the garden plants in the available garden space after everything else is in place.
Many thanks to Bert Brink for the trailer load of manure for the garden.
Keep watching this area - it will get better every week.
Work well done F-Troopers! YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Mornington Peninsula - April 2009

We have had a wonderful week of golf at the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. As you can see by the photos we have had perfect weather. Today (Friday) is our first wet day & we do not have golf programmed for today.
The courses we have played have been Rosebud, The Open Course at Moonah Links, The Legends Course at Moonah Links, The Dunes and Cape Schancks.
Today we are going to have a look at the course at Portsea which would have been our next choice.
We have had a fabulous week staying at Rosebud in the Trueman Cottages which are the best share accommodation I have seen. It has been a good value week.
Back to reality tomorrow!

Golf - Thursday 16th April 2009

What a super day for golf and I cannot believe that we only had 26 lady starters. It was blue sky & sunshine and a great day to be outdoors.

Sorry I have no photos of the winners today as it was all over by the time I made it into the clubhouse. We tried to give everyone some encouragement as they passed by us at the 13th.
I was working on the Ladies Garden at the 13th with Peter getting the area tidied up after the recent heavy rain. The garden is just about two years old & is starting to fill out nicely. We have not lost any shrubs at all which has been a bonus. The gazanias are starting to spread along the edges of the dam. By summer we should have a lovely show of colour.
Peter nearly finished up in the dam while he was whipper snipping the edges of the dam. He went in feet first (photo above) but managed to save himself & the whipper snipper. I just happened to have the camera handy (then I went & helped him up).

Golf - Sunday 12th April 2009

Easter Sunday turned out to be a perfect day for golfing, blue sky and sunshine in the morning and a nice calming cloud cover in the afternoon & NO RAIN! What a bonus!

I was not intending to play golf today as Peter is away. However with very little effort Norma Presdee succeeded in changing my mind. Norma was unable to play today so I filled in for her in a team event with Ray Presdee, Wally & Rhonda Robertson. We had a good first nine holes with everyone contributing to the score - however the wheels fell off a little on the back nine. The girls were 3 holes up for the Keno Ticket at the 15th hole & let the boys scramble back for a draw at the 18th.

The Event of the day was a Team Event with two scores to count of the Men's five pars, Three scores to count on the four pars and four scores to count on the three pars plus a Singles Event.

We had 83 starters with 10 visitors from Canada, Gordon, Kogarah, New Brighton, Oatlands, Roseville, Terrigal and Terry Hills.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Robin Incoll had 38 points to get runner up and was also celebrating her birthday (check out the birthday bracelet in the photo above); Mark Stimpson is celebrating his birthday tomorrow: Annie Brink had a birdie on the 5th; Des Wilson got nearest the pin with an 18ft putt to come (missed the putt); Rumour has it that "someone" had an airswing on the putting green today (as this is for highlights - no name will be mentioned).
Spencer Walklate had some highlights from his Saturday's game: On the 7th he hit his drive to the left into the pine trees and had an almighty airswing for his second shot trying to get out of the trees; on the 15th he put his second shot into the dam, took his punishment penalty & chipped his next shot into the hole to score 4/3 - now that is what I call a highlight! Well done Spencer.

On Wednesday last a few of the golf girls got together meeting at Fay Bailey's - taking a lovely luncheon and a few bottles of wine to cheer her up while she is "out of golf" with an injured foot.
Fay is recovering well and can now move around with a protective shoe to keep her safe.

We are looking forward to Fay getting back to golf and having a full recovery from her injury.

Golf - Tuesday 7th April 2009

It was a lovely cool day for golf today but rather heavy going out on the couse I thought, but it did not worry a lot of our good golfer's who bought home some good team scores.
My playing partners today were Judy Verlander (Captain), Elizabeth McNamara and Rita Gilmour. We had a good fun day and had some good chips and putting from time to time.
Judy was a handy ball collector with her little bike to buzz around on after we selected the best ball. We did find the birdies hard to come by but had a nice day on the village green.

President Rosemary Cohen announced that the result of the Horshem raffle was a total of $1,261 which was rounded to $1,500 topped up from our "Raffle account" . Rosemary passed on the appreciation and thanks of the Horsham Club to our Members for our generous contribution in their time of need.
On a sad note we understand that Di and Steve Thomlinson's son Damien has been seriously injured while serving with the Australan Army overseas. Our thoughts go to Di, Steve, Damien & their family at this time of trauma.

F-troop monday 6th April 2009

We were a bit shy on workers today for all different kinds of reasons. One being the Gosford girls were representing our club at Pennants today so Robin Incoll, Jan Walker, Di Beechey and Chris Dekker were unavailable for a very good reason.
The F-troopers I saw today were Clyde Cruickshanks, Des Wilson, Bert Brink, Martin Gallagher, Garry Trigg, Warren Gray, Duncan Dyer, Spencer Walklate, George Foster, Peter Martin and Yvonne Wilson. Thirteen in all. My appologies if I have missed anyone.
We managed to get through a big workload. Warren Gary & Garry Trigg on the rough cutters, George Foster on the tractor, Des Wilson & Bert Brink on the drainage, Martin Gallagher, Duncan Dyer, Spencer Walklate clearing out the dams, Yvonne Wilson garden work on the 14th 15th & trimming. Clyde Cruickshanks, Peter Martin & Spencer Walklate working on the new path at the practice net garden.
The new garden at the practice nets is starting to take shape with the new path being formed today. This will take a few weeks to complete. We are looking for garden seats to put in this garden. Anyone who has an old garden seat at home that they would like to dispose of we would happily take it off your hands. We are also looking for manure to enhance the soil prior to planting out the gardens. Anyone who has access to any garden manure (horse, cow or fowl) preferably for zero cost please let me know as the soil needs to be rejuvenated and the garden area is quite large.
Many thanks to our workers today. A job well done!

Golf - Sunday 5th April 2009

Today was the first day to change back from daylight savings and it was noticable how quickly the day seemed to close in.
The event of the day was a Singles for Men and Ladies plus a medley teams 1 x 2 x 3.
We had 122 starters with 4 visitors from Everglades, Magenta Shores and Wyong.
Our playing partners were George and Vicki Foster who were great team players finding some good three pointers when we needed them most & Peter played a steady game getting two birdies. Our best hole was the 15th where we scored 10 points and my 5/2 was not required. My team did not have as much trouble with the greens as I did and neither did some of the others who came in with some great scores.

RUNNERS UP: Julie Hazzard, John Hazzard, Mark Stimpson & Anne Stimpson - 85 points on a countback.
