F-Troop Monday 31st August 2009

There was not a lot of golf happening due to maintenance work to the greens however it was a good opportunity for F-Troop to do a timber pick up and clean up outside the front fence which is an area that had become overgrown and untidy (not a good look when looking at the course from Racecourse Road).
We were short on numbers again today which meant we had to stretch our resources.
We had eleven F-Troopers on duty and managed to achieve quite a lot of work including timber pick up, clean up outside the fence on Racecourse Rd, remove old tired natives from the 6th tee and the back of the 5th green as part of the garden refurbishment, water & weed gardens, plant more succulents in the wedding garden, planted out some more daisies on the 17th garden, planted a new "Peaches and Cream" Grevillia on the 5th green garden, planted a new Cascade Lilly Pilly at the native garden on the 6th tee, fertilized and watered the roses, raked and cleaned around the putting green, watering and fertilizing gardens on the 3rd, 14th & 15th, fertilizing of the orchids.
Those I sighted working today were Jan Walker (timber clean up at our front entrance and 1st tee), Garry Trigg and George Foster (on the rough cutters), Warren Gray (on timber pick up which he did today unaided due to our shortage of workers), Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Arthur Verlander, Des Wilson and Peter Martin (Clean up of Racecourse Rd, shrub removal and anything else that was going including the hauling around and connecting of the water hoses), Yvonne Wilson and Rosalie Dyer (garden weeding, fertilizing and watering). I was busy working on the roses, succulents & native shrubs as well as a clean up at the putting green.
The F-Troopers assisted me by being able to pull out the old native shrubs with the aid of machinery which saved a lot of back breaking work as some of the roots were very deep seated.
We have now found a water outlet for this area which means we are able to get water to this area in the very hot summer months.
I have finally got to the native garden on the 6th and have started to purchase new natives to freshen up these gardens. Thanks to a generous donation from Graham & Anne Smith (Club Members) we can purchase some colourful natives to enhance the gardens (photos of some of the new grevilleas attached). I also planted another cascade lilly pilly to match the existing one that is doing so well there. We still have a lot of clean up work to do as the weeds have grown extensively with the recent rains. When finished this area should be a real eye catcher.
I received a very generous donations of lovely succulent plants from Ron Gowing (Club Member)last week - Thanks Ron!. I have placed some in the new garden & am saving some for a new succulent garden on the 3rd tee (coming soon).
Work was continued through last week when we repaired the watering system on the garden at the 18th tee and cleaned up the path area from the 17th to the 18th. We also replaced the ornamentals at the "Ladies Garden" after the destruction by vandals. They are not as eye catching as the "Cup and Saucer" and "Watering can" however are more practical and more difficult to break.
Des & Yvonne Wilson were also busy through the week cleaning up, fertilizing and watering the hydrangea garden on the 3rd tee and the miniature oleanders on the 5th tee as well as looking after the camelia garden at the bush toilet and the bird of paradise gardens at the 15th. Thanks Des & Yvonne - Top Job!

Golf - Sunday 30th August 2009

Today was the second round of the "Teams Series" sponsored by "RETIREINVEST" Gosford.
This series is a very popular event well supported by our members.
Our playing partners today were Doug Incoll and Helen Stuart and we had a great fun day out on the village green. The wind got the blame for all our bad shots but we did have some good highlights along the way - the best of which was the girls winning the Keno ticket from the boys.
Our team (Ian Mitchell and Iris Talbot) did well with Ian scoring a very commendable 40 points (following up after a previous day score of 38 points) and Iris chiming in with a 33, Peter 35 and 40 points from me brought us in at the top score to be beaten on a countback by the winners and runners up. At least that has us at a fighting distance for the third and final round.

Golf - Thursday 27th August 2009

Things are looking up now that the weather is warming, plenty of blue sky and sunshine - just what the lady golfers want and our 43 starters today are evidence of that.
My playing partners today were Wendy Stapleton and Dawn Tromp & my highlight was playing with both the winners of Division 1 and Division 2. Our highlights were many with Wendy playing a lovely steady game and Dawn turning after the front 9 with 27 points - must have been the company that they had! What a pity it was not a team match we would have had a top score with Dawn bringing home 46 points and Wendy 39 points.

Golf - Tuesday 25th August 2009

I did have reservations about playing golf today when I awoke to find our garden wall & tables had blown over in fierce winds overnight & the forecast was for more of the same. In addition to that I had awoken with a very irritated eye which was not showing any signs of improving.

Because it was Tuesday and the sun was still shining it was enough to get me to the course & once there there was nothing else to do but to play on regardless. I was frightened to look at the course damage after the high winds and was relieved to find that things were much worse at home than on the course. The wind was nothing more than nuisance value and my infected eye seemed to make me concentrate more & I finished up runner up in my division & only had one three putt all day. I have decided that an eye patch may be appropriate for my next match as I played better with one good eye. My playing partners today were Rosalie Dyer and Val Anderson. We had some good highlights along the way and had some close putts that should have gone in.

The Event of the day was a Ladies Single Stroke -WGNSW & Club Medal and we had 61 starters.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Pricilla Webster scored 3 with one putt at the 14th coming out of the bunker; Lyn Cruickshanks had two birdies on the 8th and the 14th and winning the nearest the pins; Kay Adams played a nice steady game; my highlight was only having one three putt during the match & that was while enduring an infected eye ( a patch next week will be appropriate). I am sorry I did not get around to collect more highlights today amd I am sure that there were many that we have missed out on.

F-Troop Monday 24th August 2009

It was an unofficial F-Troop day because of the "Holden Scramble" day did involve some of our workers having an 11.30 shotgun start.
Those available for work today were Martin Gallagher, Arthur Verlander, Geoff Bridge, Warren Gray, Mary Bromwich, Di Beechey and Peter Martin. It was a great day for me in the gardens as eveyone made themselves available for "garden" work and rubbish pick up which was good value for me in progressing through the garden projects.
The last few days we have had some hot drying weather so watering had to be a priority out on the course where watering is difficult. My team today was Martin Gallagher, Arthur Verlander and Geoff Bridge and together we managed to achieve "finding" water outlets at the second, fifth, and the 17th which allowed us to water extensively the gardens at the second tee, the tibouchina trees and the new crepe myrtles and the golden penda at the back of the temporary tee at the second, the gardens near the 3rd and fifth tees, the garden at the dog leg of the 17th and the tanika grasses at the 17th green. It was difficult to carry around and set up the large hoses to enable the watering of these gardens and I thank Martin, Arthur and Geoff for their patience and assistance with the watering today. My thanks to them also for moving a large frangipani tree & helping with the transplanting at the second tee and re-locating a bird of paradise plant. All these gardens got some weeding done as well which has made them look much better. More hands made less work for me so the help in the gardens today was much appreciated.
Mary Bromwich & Warren Gray were a fabulous help today - trimming the shrubs at the back of the 8th tee (something that has been on my list of things to do for quite some time) and picking up rubbish and loose timber around the course.
Peter put together a new hose for the front gardens at the clubhouse & did some watering there.
Di Beechey took over the watering and took care of all the gardens in that area.
We also took steps to rope off the gravel path at the new garden to prevent golf carts from entering that area. A better looking barrier will be erected next F-Troop day. This path is meant for greenkeepers machinery only.
The roses at the putting green were sprayed for blackspot and aphids and the hedge gardens tidied up.
I was happy with the days work and had great value from F-Troop workers having a 'garden day' to help me out. Thanks F-Troop.

Team Bonding - Saturday 22nd August 2009

A Team Bonding night at Bruce and Leanne Binns to watch the Rugby Union Bledisloe Cup match between Australia and New Zealand was a great social evening. All of us turned up in Australian Gear to cheer on our team with the exception of one (Nigel) who came dressed in "All Blacks". It was a close game, sadly narrowly lost by Australia at the very last.

Nigel did however demonstrate his loyalty to Australia later in the evening (photo attached)
