Golf - Tuesday 29th January 2013

The deluge has continued overnight so the Gosford Golf Course is closed today.

No golf ladies!

The forecast is telling us the weather will be clearing and our course does drain well these days so hopefully we will be back in action tomorrow with no serious damage done to the course.

F-Troop - Monday 28th January 2013

Today was a struggle for most people with relentless rain for the majority of the day - but not for some of our fearless and dedicated F-Troopers who braved the early morning drizzle to get some more undercutting done at the 17th and to tidy up around the clubhouse.

We had six Troopers that I know of that turned up today.  Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Martin Gallagher, Trevor Harrison, Peter Martin & Di Beechey.

Di Beechey tidied the car parks and cleared all the gutters and checked that the wedding gardens were okay before escaping the rain.

Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Martin Gallagher, Trevor Harrison & Peter Martin did as much undercutting as possible given the weather conditions.

I took a look out the window and checked the radar and made a decision that heavy rain was inevitable so the planned projects were shelved and I took a day off.

Our dams will be well and truly full which is a good thing and hopefully the course has not suffered to much with the deluge.  The gardens will be happily deep watered.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Sunday 27th January 2013

Golf was a non-event today with rain falling consistently for most of the day which made it very unpleasant for golf.

The fairways and gardens will be happy and our dams restored which is a bonus.

I understand that we have more rain on the way but hopefully short lived so that we can get back on the village green and get back to our happy golfing.

Golf - Tuesday 22nd January 2013

The Golf Event of the day was a Ladies Single Stableford - two divisions.

My playing partnerss today were Lyn Bates & Anne Burke. We had a lovely day on the village green and were lucky to get finished before it got too hot.  My appologies to Lyn & Anne for not publishing our photo taken at the first tee. I accidently deleted it while editing the photos - and it was a nice photo too!

We had 47 starters.

RESULTS:

DIVISION 1 - 0 TO 23:

WINNER:  Wendy Stapleton - 38 points

RUNNER UP:  Margaret Maclachlan - 37 points

3RD:  Kay Adams - 35 points

DIVISION 2 - 24 TO 45:

WINNER:  Kath Payn - 38 points

RUNNER UP:  Carolyn Buttsworth - 34 points

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Anne Burke sank a beautiful 30 foot putt on the 3rd (after the pole dancing); Lyn Bates had a nice par on the 2nd and a par on the 18th that could have been a birdie; Kath Payn had four 3 pointers in a row 8/9/10/11; Wendy Stapleton played a nice steady game with a birdie at the 11th and with Kay Adams & Daudi Bragg being good company to encourage her along; Allison Guthrie played a good back 9; Nan Richards had a lot of 1's and 3's; Narelle Medcalf in her first competition game scored a credible 30 points and enjoyed her day; Elly Van Den Berg had a 4 pointer and a 3 pointer; Judy Verlander had 20 points on the back 9; Lynn Puiatti had a gobbler on the 6th; Kay Baillee had a birdie 2/4 at the 14th; my highlights were a gobbler at the 6th, a par at the 10th and two very fortunate miracle shots at the 14th and the 18th that could have been  disasters but turned to gold after some lucky bounces in the right direction;

F-Troop - Monday 21st January 2013

We had a skeleton group of 9 F-Troopers today which made the going tough to get through all the projects in waiting and to have enough hands-on for jobs in progress. We carried on regardless and did manage to get some good work done.

Today we had Trevor Harrison, Don Nicholls, Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Martin Gallagher, Peter Martin, Jan Martin, Di Beechey and Anne Burgess.

The Tree Gang of Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge and Martin Gallagher worked on the dangerous tree at the Men's 3rd tee that had been struck by lightning.  It was a large tree and they managed to salvage some good firewood stock.   Prices for this year's firewood are displayed in the F-Troop notice board downstairs. Anyone wanting timber this year please put your order in to Martin Gallagher as soon as possible to guarantee your delivery.

Trevor Harrison & Don Nicholls did a great job of installing guttering to the Greenkeepers shed as well assisting Di Beechey installing a bamboo fence at the BBQ garden.

Peter Martin was the group supervisor as well as rubbish pick up & general assistant to everyone.

Di Beechey & Anne Burgess worked together cleaning up the car park, BBQ area, gardens at the 15th that had grown to jungle proportions and the garden at the 2nd, trimming some of the agapantha flowers and installing the Bamboo Fence at the BBQ area.

I worked on the Bush Toilet area which was full of sticks and leaves including the gutter leading into the creek. The toilets were cleaned and hosed out.  The camellias suffered from the heatwave so they were weeded, fertilized, seasoled & mulched and we removed a ute load of rubbish from the area. The Ladies tee at the 3rd was raked and cleaned, the Rainbow Tree at the 3rd mulched and with some assistance from Martin Gallagher the olive trees at the 15th were weeded, trimmed and mulched.  Martin also poisoned around the trees at the 2nd fairway and the rogue bougainvillea at the 18th green.

Morning tea of fruit muffins were very welcome as we had all worked up a thirst and hunger by then.  Thanks Chef John!

The heatwave did cause us some concern and some of our hedges and shrubs and tree ferns were badly burnt off.  45 degrees is a difficult temperature to combat so there was not a lot that could be done to save them. Thankfully we have had some good rain since then which should do some rejuvenating.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Keith Morris - 1924 to 2013

Sadly I am the bearer of bad news.  Keith Morris passed away yesterday at approximately 6.00pm.

Keith reached the ripe old age of 89 years and was a keen golfer and supporter of the Gosford Golf Club for many years and was a Member of Dad's Army contributing to the beautification of the course.

Keith will be sadly missed and our deepest  sympathy is extended to Doris who is also a keen golfer and a member of Gosford Golf Club for many years.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced but it is anticipated that it may be next Tuesday.  Please wait for further confirmation which I will put on the blog as soon as the arrangements have been finalised.

F- Troop - Monday 14th January 2013

The early cloud cover gave us some comfortable working conditions this morning which was appreciated as we had much to do after the excessive heat, wind and rain of the last week.  The course was a mess with a lot of loose timber down.

We had twelve volunteers today to share the load.  Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Trevor Harrison, Martin Gallagher, Don Nicholls, Peter Martin, Warren Gray, Rob Benson, Di Beechey, Anne Burgess, Jan Martin and we welcomed a newcomer - Richard Henry who was able to help out this morning.  Thanks Richard!

The Tree Gang of Duncan Dyer, Martin Gallagher, Geoff Bridge & Richard Henry worked their way through the rest of the 16th fairway and onto the 17th fairway undercutting low lying trees. They took away nine trailer loads to the dumping area.

Trevor Harrison & Don Nicholls worked on connecting a pump to the water supply to enable pressurised filling to the batteries in the carts at the new cart shed, then worked on repairing the old rotary hoe with the assistance of Geoff Bridge so that work could begin on creating a garden bed at the new cart shed area.

Rob Benson & Warren Gray had the daunting task of rubbish pick up around the course and managed to take five trailer loads to the dumping area.

Peter Martin co-ordinated the workers, worked on the repair of the rotary hoe, raked up at the back of the club and assisted where needed.

Di Beechey arrived very early and raked up at the BBQ area and back driveway, trimmed the Agapanthus and weeded at the front gardens, raked up at the 18th green and hedge area and the 1st and 10th tees.

Anne Burgess was also an early starter helping Di clean up the BBQ area, raked the area between the 17th green and the 18th tee, helped me to clean up the wedding garden area.

My time was spent at the wedding garden area, the putting green area and the 1st and 10th tees - weeding and raking as needed and fertilized the roses.

Morning tea of Aussie Scrolls were appreciated by the hard working troopers.  Thanks Chef John!

Yesterday's welcome rainfall gave us a break from watering today so we could concentrate on the clean up of the course.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Sunday 13th January 2013

It seems that we had a very jovial presentation night tonight
Was it that everyone was very happy that the heavy rain was after golf?
or was it "Full Moon"? (could not tell for cloud cover!)

Some nice rain tonight (after golf) was very welcome.  I guess a few of the stragglers may have got a bit wet but it is a very welcome change after all of our hot weather and the gardens and fairways will be smiling.

My thanks to Lorraine Bignall for filling in for me with tonight's presentation photos. - Thanks Lorraine!
