Golf - Tuesday 31st March 2009

The Event of the day was a single stableford. The course greens are under maintenance so the starters had to play the first nine holes twice to allow the greenkeepers to complete their work.

Showers were predicted and it was showers that we got. Ongoing light showers with the occasional heavier downpour. I am sure the greenkeepers are delighted to get rain right at this time but it did deter a lot of our players including me.

We had 14 diehards who were prepared to face the newly sanded greens and the showers.

I believe we raised in excess of $1,200 to aid the Horsham Golf Club that has been devastated by the recent fires in Victoria. Congratulations to our committee ladies who ran this raffle & also to all the members that supported it.

GOLF RESULTS:

WINNER: Bev Adams - 35 points

RUNNER UP: Shirley Daly - 33 points on a countback

NO HANDICAPPING TODAY

F-Troop Monday 30th March 2009

It was a huge day for F-Troopers with many hands needed to cope with the workload. We had 22 workers today and that was a great help to get a lot of work achieved.
We welcomed three new F-Troopers - Richard Korff, Chris Dekker and Jan Walker who put in some good hours of work to help out.
Today we had on duty Garry Trigg, Geoff Bridges, Bert Brink, Des Wilson, Warren Gray, Mark Stimpson, Bruce White, Peter Martin, Spencer Walklate, Clyde Cruickshanks, Richard Korff, Duncan Dyer, Doug Incoll, Robin Incoll, Chris Dekker, Di Beechey, Ron Beechey, Jan Walker, George Foster, Martin Gallagher and Roger Horsenell helping Duncan Dyer with the tree felling.
Garry Trigg did a shift on the rough cutter, Des Wilson & Bert Brink were busy on the 7th with the drainage work, George Foster and Warren Gray were on tree felling & rubbish pick up work,
Martin Gallagher, Geoff Bridges, Spencer Walklate, Duncan Dyer, Roger Horsenell, Mark Stimpson, Bruce White and Doug Incoll were on tree felling. Clyde Cruickshanks, Richard Korff and Chris Dekker worked on the Practice Nets garden. Chris Dekker also weeded the putting green gardens. Jan Walker cleared and raked the front area of the clubhouse, Robin Incoll sprayed the Azaleas at the putting green gardens and cleaned up the car park area. Di & Ron Beechey trimmed and weeded the 12th green hedge, the 13th garden, the garden at the 2nd green, the magnolia garden and the front lawn and gardens. Peter Martin trimmed the lilly pilly at the ladies 10th tee, the shrubs in the 12th tee garden, raking and cleaning at the front of the clubhouse, helped with the rubbish pick up while I sprayed and dead headed the roses and raked and cleared around the first tee, added some new soil to the Daintree Pine on the 15th.
In all it was a great days work with most of the work done before the showers set in.
It is always good to welcome new members to our F-Troop even if your contribution can only be small - it all helps. I am currently looking for someone (or a group of people) who would be willing to look after the indoor plants inside the clubhouse. This would require once a week watering, fertilizing as required. The board is also considering adding some potted plants to the front entry. If that happens I would also be looking for someone to look after them.
Please contact me (Jan Martin) if you would like to contribute in that way. A group effort is always an option for this type of work as someone can always be availabe if the other is away on holidays etc.
YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY AS REPORTED TO ME: Warren Gray and Mary Bromwich were (as in had been) having a lovely day until they reached the 5th hole. Warren hit his drive off of the wrong tee marking and was about to be followed by his other male playing partner. Mary warned Warren's playing partner before he hit his shot- Warren suffered a two shot penalty (not happy Mary); we had the pleasure of having four lady visitors today, one of whom won our ladies singles event today (Denise Hopkins from Windsor). Her playing partner Tina, at the 3rd hole managed to fall, fully clothed into the dam and still came in smiling, (no photo of the fall - sorry!) as a side interest one of these ladies, Dawn Robertson, played squash at Wally Johnson's Squash Courts in Sydney and for a time had worked at the courts ; Peter Martin had birdies on the 2nd and 10th; George Foster birdied the 1st and 2nd (end of story George tells me) George's playing partners Kay and Col Adams along with George all birdied the 2nd - Vicki tells me she got an honest 6/2; Cheryl Davison got the nearest the pin on the 8th; Doris Morris birdied the 8th to score 2/5; Bruce & Leanne Binns blitzed in with a 50 point score for the mixed 2BBB; Rosalie Dyer had three nice 3 pointers on the back 9; my highlight was a par 4/4 on the 9th.
A big cherio to Fay Bailey who is laid us with an injured leg. Speedy recovery Fay!

Clearwater New Zealand - February 2009

Clearwater Golf Resort at Christchurch NZ was the first golf game of our tour. It was a cold overcast and showery day but we did get in our 18 holes without getting too wet.
The course was being prepared for the NZ PGA Championships which was to be held the following week. We could not resist the urge to stand on the scoreboard & advertising signs.
The Pharkawie tribe had their first experience at playing out of the baharrested grass & I did overhear some mumblings & groans during the course of the match - some of them mine.
I think their trademark mumble of "werrdapharkawie" could have originated here.
I would like to play this course again in better weather, but at least it was not actually full on rain & fog as we experienced at Terrace Downs the following day.
Typical of NZ weather - Christchurch cleared up to fine and sunny day on the day we flew out to Queenstown. The following week it was blue skies and sunshine in Christchurch so it is just pot luck to get good weather on golf days.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY AS REPORTED TO ME: Ronda Jordon had a birdie on the 8th; Jan Fitzgerald had a nice 4 on the 17th; Leanne O'Donoghue hit a lovely 'sandy' out of the bunker on the 11th into the hole for a birdie; Di Thomlinson had three birdies; Georgina Lamb had a birdie on the 8th; Linda Rankin had a birdie on the 6th.
My playing partners today were Kay Adams, Wendy Stapleton and Robin Incoll. We had a lovely day and like everyone else we were battling with the heat towards the end. Our Team did not have any wipes on any of the holes and finished with a commendable +10. We all contributed to the score and got some nice putts in to save a + at times.
The Ladies Committee are currently running a raffle to support the Horsham (Victoria) Golf Club after their losses in the recent bushfires that devastated the area. We still have next week to show our support for this raffle so be sure to get plenty of tickets. The members have shown good support so far so there should be a substantial donation made to this worthy cause.

There were no highlights reported to me so there must not have been a lot of excitement out on the course today. Being a stroke day, it has the ability to bring out the worst shots in us.
I found a lot of bunkers today and my highlight was getting out of them with the first shot although one effort did finish up in a bunker on the other side of the green. A nice long putt into the hole on the 3rd to scramble a five made my day. My playing partners Yvonne & June were great company so the day was worthwhile.

Golf - Sunday 22nd March 2009

The event of the day was a 2 Ball Team plus Singles Men and Ladies.
We had 113 starters with 9 visitors from Kareela, Magenta, South West Rocks, Terrigal, Tumbarumba & Wyong.
Our playing partners today were Lyn & Clyde Cruickshanks & we had a really good day, pity about some of the golf but the company was good. We had some great highlights one of which was Clyde having his buggy run amok into the bunker on the left hand side of the green as Clyde watched his ball glide nicely onto the green. Clyde was very cool and went on to score a 3/3.
Lyn patiently picked up his sand bucket & gathered up all the balls, tees, markers, gloves etc that had scattered out of the buggy & into the sand.
