Golf - Tuesday 30th August 2011 - Fun Day

F-Troopers Peter Martin, Jan Martin, Di Beechey and Anne Burgess were working overtime today as we had a very small window of opportunity to pick up some badly needed garden mulch that was donated to our club by John & Julie Hazzard (via Julie's son).  The trick was that we needed to get there before anybody else did as it was first in best dressed arrangement.  We managed to get three trailer loads for our gardens which took us all morning to pick up & distribute over the gardens.  We also received a plant donated by Bev Adams which we planted out on the 6th - Thanks Bev - your donation is much appreciated.   Anne Burgess worked in a supervisory role only as she had an arguement with a stick in the gardens yesterday ( and lost) suffering an injured leg.  Julie Hazzard has donated some lovely tree orchids which were placed at the 18th garden. Thanks Julie!  We rely heavily on these types of donations to keep our gardens beautiful.

Because the course is under maintenance the Golf Event of the day was a Ladies "Fun Day" Team Stableford - two scores to count.

We had 51 starters.

RESULTS:

TEAM WINNERS NETT:  Yvonne Wilson, Lorraine Bignall, Kath Payn & Lynn Puiatti - 93 points

TEAM RUNNERS UP NETT:  Julie Hazzard, Yvonne Cumming, June Hayes & Sharon Anderson - 88 points

Norma Cubis, Judy Verlander, Debbie Grinham & Rhonda Robertson - 85 points on a countback

NO HANDICAPPING TODAY (course was under maintenance & the same 9 holes were played twice.)

Op Shop Ball has been cancelled

I am sad to say that the Op Shop Ball set down for this coming Saturday Night  3rd September 2011 has been cancelled through lack of interest.  That is a shame because last year's Op Shop Ball was  great night that everybody really enjoyed the evening and joined in the spirit of the event.

This cancellation (as with the cancellation of the New Year's Eve Events)  is further justification that the club cannot survive on Member support alone.

F-Troop - Monday 29th August 2011

We had an action packed F-Troop morning being the first day that we have been able to get vehicles out on the course for maintenance tasks for some three weeks.

We had on hand Duncan Dyer, Des Wilson, Garry Trigg, Fred Middleton, Bruce White, George Foster, Warren Gray, Peter Martin, Jan Martin, Georgina Lamb, Anne Burgess and Yvonne Wilson.

The biggest task of the morning was bringing down some of the Coral Trees on the left hand side of the 2nd Fairway.  Coral Trees are weeds in the same line as Camphor Laurels & are no value to a golf course.
The Tree Gang this morning was Duncan Dyer, Des Wilson, George Foster, Garry Trigg, Bruce White & Fred Middleton.  Everything went smoothly when the first couple of trees came down & then havoc broke out when the F-Troopers were attacked by a swarm of bees that had set up a nest in a big tree that was laying down across the 2nd fairway.  Several F-Troopers suffered bee stings the worst being Des Wilson who got multiple stings.  In order to be able to remove the tree from the fairway the bees nest had to be eradicated so that the tree could be cut up and removed.  Duncan Dyer with the help of George Foster & Des Wilson managed to take care of the problem while the rest of us stayed a very safe distance away in our vehicles ready to run if necessary.  The boys worked hard & did a great job cutting up and removing the timber.

Peter Martin & Warren Gray did the next biggest task being the rubbish pick up around the course which has accumulated for the last three weeks.  It was a huge job & well done by Peter & Warren.
Peter went on to secure a pole at the Ladies 13th garden so that we can add a "Teapot" feature to this garden.

Georgina Lamb & I chipped around the Limelights on the 7th, the Blue Ice Conifers on the 12th and managed to get half of the Lomandra Grasses on the 15th free of weeds.

Anne Burgess cleaned out the garden behind the Men's 10th tee.

Yvonne Wilson did some TLC on her gardens including fertilizing.

Morning Tea was very welcome after all that hard work & we enjoyed some chocolate pastries fresh from the oven.  Thanks Chef John!

The Water Feature in the new garden at the first is now working well. It is a pity that we had yet another careless "Bigfoot" stepping on one of the new hedge plants in this garden.  After going to the trouble to replace the broken hedge plant at the front steps last week I found that yet another hedge plant had been carelessly stepped on.  (Very disappointing after all the effort that has gone into creating these gardens) - However we will persevere as we believe the effort is worthwhile.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Thursday 25th August 2011

There are definite signs that spring is on it's way.  A lovely, warm and sunny day was appreciated by all of our golfers today and even the duck family seemed happy enough to have a day without rain.  The course still has some very wet patches but is improving every day.  Some August winds could do the trick & dry out the excess water.  More good weather is due in the next few days so pull out the golf clubs and get out there while you can.

The Golf Event of the day was a Ladies Single Stableford - Over the Field and we had 21 starters.

Golf - Tuesday 23rd August 2011

I think we all looked in disbelief when we woke up this morning to find that more rain had fallen overnight and further small showers happened through the day.  We are all "Not Happy Jan" as the fairways were wet enough as it was.

We were supposed to be having a "Presidents Vs Captains" day which is always a popular event.  The Course was open but no carts were allowed on & the course was very wet.  That was enough to put off all of our lady golfers - so there was no golf event today.

I filled in my day in the gardens & did see a few social golfers having a hit but it would have been hard going.

A protective rope has had to be put around the new hedge at the front entrance to the club as we have some very careless bigfeet stomping on one of the new plants & snapping it off at ground level.  This meant the purchase of a new plant - Not happy Jan.

The last of the tibouchinas for the water feature garden at the 1st has arrived and has been planted.  We have a little bit more fussing to do & this garden will then be complete.  The water feature is up and running & hopefully will add some "welcome" atmosphere at the entrance to the 1st & 10th tees.

We are all well and truly "over" all this wet weather so let's hope there is some lovely warm sunshine and a brisk breeze around the corner so our course can snap back into top condition.  The greens are in great shape so some "dry" weather is all that is required for the rest of the course.
