F-Troop Monday 8th February 2010

There was plenty of work around for F-Troop today after all the bad weather of last week.
The bonus today was that none of the gardens needed to be watered. I was not sure where to start as I have had two weeks off and needed a starting point for all the options on hand.
The F-Troopers have done a great job in the last few weeks & the course was looking good after all the rain. Martin has placed a trellis for the Mandevillas to grow on & they look happily settled.
On hand for work duty today I saw Martin Gallagher, Geoff Bridge, George Foster, Garry Trigg. Warren Gray and Arthur Verlander. John (our chef) and his staff supplied us with yet another scrumpteous morning tea of scones, Jam & Cream which was much appreciated by us all.
Garry took care of the rough cutting duties while Warren and Arthur were on timber & rubbish pick up as well as cleaning drains including a huge job at the back of the 14th tee which has been in need of maintenance. Martin, Geoff, George and Peter put in a big morning organising a drain around the cart shed and finished it with cold mix bitumen to seal out the water. The bitumen mix was also used to fill pot holes in the carpark area. The cart shed was gurneyed clean & a water barrier board was installed at the entrance door. The carts were also washed.
I decided to start at the front of the clubhouse & work my way through to the putting green & wedding garden area - filling three bins with weeds and rubbish just from that small area.
While I was a way we had a tragedy with one of our iceberg roses at the putting green. The rose has snapped in the main stem & I have serious doubts that we will be able to save it even though it does not show signs of stress yet. We must have had some serious wind or some other kind of interference to have caused so much damage as the rose support seemed fine before. We had a tragedy earlier with the rose the other side which has suffered a virus attack. I suspect that both of these roses may need to be replaced and maybe even a third rose on the other side which has suffered a similar fate. We will need to raise some funds to replace these plants which brings me to our timber sales which we want to promote so that we can get some revenue to work with. We have already had some orders for timber for this coming winter and we would like to get more. We have a good supply of timber from trees that were recently removed. If you are in the market for good firewood for this coming winter - now is the time to order it by contacting Martin Gallagher or myself. We need funds to replace the roses and also to purchase some more grasses to complete our project at the 15th bunker area.
I have recently received a donation of white pebbles from Iris Talbot which I am going to use to top up the pebbles in the wedding garden area. Thanks Iris - your donation was very much appreciated.
Many thanks to all my garden helpers for their contributions while I have been away.
YES, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
