Our first game of golf (or part therof) was at Hamilton Island Golf Course which is on the nearby Dent Island. The logistics of moving 120 golfers and their clubs from the ship to a Catamaran & then to a small barge to Dent Island was a huge task. We ended up only being able to get in 12 holes of golf because of the time restrictions of getting us all back to the ship by 3.00pm.
The day was about the experience of playing at the course rather than completing a game. It was a very challenging course and we were told that 21 points is an average score which was a bit scary. Some of the holes were difficult but not impossible. Lost balls were an issue as once in the long grass they are usually not to be found.
The top men's score for the 12 holes was 25 points and for the ladies 22 points. Our partners today were Ross & Christine Drakeford & we had a lovely day. I personally enjoyed the experience and my highlight of the day was finishing with the same ball I started with.
The views from the course were outstanding and on some holes it was hard to concentrate on the golf. We did not have time to visit Hamilton island itself but it was visable from the course & we could see the planes flying in.
Tomorrow we play at Cairns - so more to come.
