Golf - Thursday 28th July 2011

A lovely warm sunny day at last but that did not stop us from a very hard slog through very wet ground. I did not play on Tuesday as I thought the course would be too wet and if I waited a couple of days the course would be drier.  I did not count on Wednesday afternoon rain & the course ended up being wetter than Tuesday.

My playing partners today were Beulah Cant, Lesley Gregory & Judy Hughes & we did the best we could out there.  Not a lot of highlights but the sunshine was beautiful.

The Event of the day was a Ladies Single Stableford - Over the Field and we had 16 starters with one visitor - Margaret Thorpe from Terrigal.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me:  Margaret Thorpe (Terrigal) played the 17th really well scoring 6/3; Cheryl Davison played nicely for her 42 points scoring a 4 pointer on the 13th; Lesley Gregory scored two 3 pointers and one 4 pointer on the back 9; My highlight was a pitching wedge shot (pin high) on the 18th and a 3 pointer at the 2nd.

Golf - Wednesday 27th July 2011

The day started off well, a cool day but with sunshine.  By the afternoon we got some cloud cover and some showers which spoilt a good day.  Our course does not need any more water.  Tomorrow is forecast with some nice sunshine and 18 degrees which will be good for golf but no carts are allowed as the course is still very wet underfoot..

The golf Event of the day was a Men's Single Stableford + 2 Ball Aggregate.

No carts were allowed and there was preferred lies throughout the green.

We had 144 starters with 5 visitors from Oberon, Shelly Beach, Terrigal, The Colonial Qld & Virginia Qld.

Golf - Tuesday 26th July 2011

The SUNSHINE was very welcome today for our lady golfers.  The course conditions were not as bad as some would have thought and teeing up was not necessary instead preferred throughout the green was the ruling.   It is still very wet underfoot and no carts are being allowed until Saturday.  The bunkers were pumped free of water yesterday so players were handicapped as normal today.

The Event of the day was a Ladies Single Stableford and we had 35 starters.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me:  Faye Levenspiel had a birdie on the 11th; Michelle McGrath had birdies on the front 9 and back 9 and had a lot of good pars.  I was not at presentation to collect other highlights but I am sure there were a few as I saw a lot of smiling golfers as they passed by the 13th garden today very happy to be out in the sunshine.

F-Troop - Monday 25th July 2011

With a very small contingent of F-Troopers working this morning we did manage to achieve a good clean up around the clubhouse and managed the get a bit of timber pickup & raking done in areas that could be reached by foot.  The Course was too wet to take out vehicles of any kind so we were restricted to the smaller clean up jobs.

Our  volunteers this morning were Geoff Bridge, Bruce White, Fred Middleton, Peter Martin, Jan Martin, Di Beechey and Anne Burgess.

Geoff, Peter, Bruce & Fred did some timber pick up and raking where they could.  Fred worked on his adopt-a-garden - Orchids at the 1st.  Peter, Geoff & Bruce removed the old hedges at the front of the clubhouse so that we can plant a new hedge on both sides to refresh that area.

Di Beechey cleaned up the path at the back of the clubhouse & worked with Anne Burgess at the 1st, 10th, 12th, 13th and the 18th raking and cleaning up.

Anne Burgess worked on her "Camellia Way" gardens and then tidied up around the Magnolias at the front street gardens before helping Di Beechey with the raking and cleaning of the tees.  Di & Anne then checked the indoor plants & assessed a work plan for the maintenance of the indoor plants.

I worked at the back of the clubhouse cleaning up the side path, the bottle bin area & the delivery area unblocking a couple of drains that were full of leaves & debris.

Morning tea was much appreciated after all our hard work & we enjoyed fruit pasties warm & fresh from the oven - Thanks Chef John! 

After morning tea Peter Martin, Geoff Bridge & myself walked out to the 13th Ladies Garden where Geoff & Peter removed the old features and replaced them with a new cup and saucer & watering can while I started to do a clean up of fireweed plants around the dam and weeds in the garden.

In all we accomplished quite a bit of necessary work while being restricted from the course.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

GOLF - TOMORROW:

The Course is still very wet but has been deemed playable. No carts will be allowed and there is going to be Tee-Up throughout the green.   The Event has been changed from the Monthly Stroke Medal Round to a stableford which is much friendlier given the course conditions.  The Monthly medal has been transferred to be held in conjunction with the Championship on the 9th August.

Golf - Sunday 24th July 2011

It is hard to keep a good golf course down!  The Course was OPEN for play today which is amazing after some 400 mm and then some of rain falling with hardly any breaks in between to give the course a chance to fully recover. Bunker were out of play and no carts were allowed.

No doubt the ground was very wet underneath but we had 30 players willing to give it a go and I have heard that it was not nearly as bad as expected. 

We had another garden wedding this afternoon and once again not a drop of rain at the vital time. 

The Golf Event of the day was a Single Stableford for Men and Ladies. There was no 2 Ball competition due to lack of numbers.

We had 30 starters with 2 visitors from Oberon & Terrigal.

Golf - Saturday 23rd July 2011

Unfortunately there was no golf today due to the course being unfit for play.   The good news is that the sunshine has finally broken through and the course looks lush and green from all the recent rainfall.  Hopefully the predictions for next week are right and we get to see some nice sunny days to help to dry out the course.

As you can see by today's photos there is still water lying on some of the fairways and this will take some time to clear.  In saying that I have been amazed at just how quickly our course has drained & dried out in recent months making it fit for play in a short amount of time.

There is some good activity at the Club today with a 3 o'clock Garden Wedding going ahead as planned and followed by the wedding reception in the Magnolia Room.  In the Sunset Room we are having a 21st birthday party so the clubhouse is being put to good use. 

The course looks lush and green & the gardens & trees looking refreshed & happy so we are all keen to get back out there on the Village Green as soon as possible.

Trivia and Wine Tasting Night - Friday 22nd July 2011

Tonight was a very successful Members and Guests evening with many people supporting a good night out at the Gosford Golf Club. 

Friday Evening is our traditional Raffles and Badge Draw Night which tonight was supported with a Wine Tasting and Trivia Night.  Given that it has been a miserable day of very wet weather it was great to see that so many Members and Guests braved the rain & enjoyed such a good night of entertainment & a nice meal.

The raffle draw was very well supported & the Badge Draw for the Members was WON tonight by a very regular attender, Director & club supporter DES WILSON.  Congratulations Des!  This win was made even sweeter for Des as he had missed out on one draw just recently when on that particular night that he had not attended the badge draw which he rarely missed. 

Members & Guests enjoyed a wine tasting which included choices of red or white wine.

Trivia Night was well run by "Chris" who put some "interesting " but not "impossible" questions to the teams & the five rounds were keenly contested by all. 

The WINNERS by a "sudden death" question to settle a drawn score were "THE STABLE MATES" team of George Foster, Vicki Foster, Gary Sammons, Enoni Sammons, Col Matterson, Lauren Matterson, Lynn Puiatti & Ron Puiatti.   CONGRATULATIONS ON A GOOD WIN TEAM!

Celebrations followed at the "Fosters Arms" at Kariong where the team was heard to be singing "We are the Champions"!!!!!!
