Results of the Gosford City Garden Competition - 23rd September 2010

I am delighted to tell you that the Gosford Golf & Function Centre has won two "Finalist" certificates in this year's competition. Congratulations to all of our "F-Troopers" who put in a lot of effort to get our gardens to such a high standard. Well done Troops!

The major award for the "Best Commercial Garden" won us a "Finalist" position. The winner of this award went to "Kincumber Mitre 10"

The "Best Eco Friendly Garden" won us a "Finalist" position with our "Ladies Garden at the 13th tee". This award went to "Henry Kendall High".

Other awards of note went to one of our long standing members - Dawn Cook. Dawn was a finalist in the "Best residential back garden" and the "Best Residential Eco Friendly Garden" Congratulations Dawn !

Photo attached was taken at our "Ladies Garden" at the 13th tee with this year's garden judge Murray Hook who is a judge with the "Open Gardens of Australia" and is a very experienced garden judge.

We have been entering the Gosford City Garden Competition for four years and have won awards as either "finalists" and/or "Winners" on every occasion that we have entered.

We had the most beautiful day for golf and the course was playing really well with plenty of run. We had some great scores come in as you can see by the results. I played to my handicap and did not win a ball.

The Event of the day was a Single Stroke - WGNSW & Club Medal including a playoff for the Medal of Medals winner.

We had 76 starters.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Judy Verlander played a nice steady game for her 65 nett; Lynn Puiatti's highlight was playing with Judy Verlander; Barbara Stratford had a birdie gobbler at the 12th; Yvonne Wilson had a gobbler at the 18th; Bev Adams had a birdie on the 11th; Sharon Anderson had a birdie on the 5th; Doreen Vines played steady for her 67 points; Kay Frewin had a 4/4 on the 16th & was on the green for 2 for the first time; Christine Drakeford played consistently & cracked the magic 100; Margaret Pratt had pars on the 8th, 12th and the 17th; Rosemary Cohen putted well; my highlight was using my rescue club in the left hand bunker at the 7th & placing my shot on the green.

Congratulations to Di Beechey, Chris Drakeford & Dawn Tromp for a good team effort representing Gosford club in a District playoff scoring plus 12 yesterday & were pipped at the post.

We had a showing of Ladies Golf Clothes in the Clubhouse today from Susan Lawrence - a Ladies Golf Boutique which stocks Australian made clothing. Many of the ladies took advantage of the selections that were available today however these clothes will be available from the Pro Shop.

Scott Cubis will order in your selections and can also arrange for the new Club Logo to be added to the clothing.

F-Troop Monday 20th September 2010 - Kidney Foundation Charity Day

F-Troop had a lovely day to work on the course & the weather stayed fine all day for the participants in the Kidney Foundation Charity Golf Day that was held on our course today.

We were very busy all morning with a skeleton crew to share the jobs. We had Geoff Bridge, Duncan Dyer, Martin Gallagher, Peter Martin, Des Wilson, Yvonne Wilson, George Foster, Kerry Cubis and managed to get through a very big workload.

Geoff Bridge, Duncan Dyer & Martin Gallagher completed the construction of the paling fence at the 18th and then later trimmed overgrown trees along the front street fenceline.

The picket fence was then painted with a natural oil finish to give it an attractive finish to protect the timber by George Foster, Peter Martin & Des Wilson. Peter then completed the watering system in the garden & got it up and running. This is the first dam fed garden watering system that we have put in place on the course. This project has now been completed & I congratulate everyone involved in putting it together. We thank Noel Annand for supplying the timber at mates rates, Col Laybutt for assisting us by design cutting some of the palings to finish the job, Geoff Bridge, Richard Casey, Duncan Dyer, Peter Martin, George Foster, Des Wilson & Martin Gallagher for their contributions to this very important project and I am delighted with the finished product. We now have a garden that we can be very proud of. F-Troop have contributed $700 towards the cost of this project from monies raised from the sale of firewood.

Cost to the club has been minimal.

Kerry Cubis & I were left to do the hard yards with the rakes and timber pickup today and we certainly earned our stripes. We started at the back of the practice nets where we filled the ute twice with rubbish that we had picked up there & then moved on to the 1st green and the second fairway where we filled the ute up once again. It was hard work but rewarding to see the tidy areas that we had created.

Yvonne Wilson fertilized and watered the front gardens & later went out with Des to work on her gardens at the 14th.

Morning tea was well received with beautiful ham & cheese croissants warm from the ovens of our club kitchens. Thanks Chef John - and welcome back from your R & R.

The deluge of rain from last Tuesday is barely noticeable and the course is in good condition however we still have a lot of timber to be cleaned up from the gale force winds of a few weeks ago at various parts of the course so we will be working our way through that in due course.
