Golf - Thursday 21st August 2008 - Final day of Championships

What a fantastic day of golf today. It was the final day of our championships and the weather was perfect. I have just had a look at tomorrow's forcast and they are calling 14 degrees with showers. How lucky were we to get four matches in near perfect weather for our 2008 championships & the course greatly improved from previous months wet weather.

I really enjoyed the day & the presentation afterwards to the very deserving winners.

I did not play with my original partners of Rosalie Dyer and Lesley Gregory due to a late withdrawal. As it is a seeded draw I was moved up one section and my playing partners today were Bev Adams and Lyn Cruickshanks. They were great company and we did have some highlights along the way. I was happy that I had my best score of the four rounds, came in 4th in my grade for the day and won a ball. If I can't win the event then it can't be better than that.

The event of the day was a single stroke and we had 65 starters.

Lyn also had a series of "A" grade bounces - on the first hole Lyn hit a beautiful drive to the middle of the fairway - the second shot she slammed straight at the bunker on the right. It missed the bunker and hit the tree to the right, rebounded off the tree to the left - beautifully over the bunker and landed back on the fairway; on the second fairway Lyn's drive was at the men's 9th tee, her second shot slammed across the fairway and hit the wire fence and rebounded sharp right onto the middle of the fairway, her third shot went through the trees on the right, her fourth shot hit a small tree in front of her and rebounded sharp left out onto the middle of the fairway - I could not believe it! Three "A" grade bounces in a row.
I asked Wendy Stapleton for the secret of her success today and she told me that she sang to herself to keep her focus on golf. She did tell me the name of the songs (which obviously did the trick) however I cannot divulge that information in case Wendy wants to patent it.
Wendy also told me that Debbie Grinham told her on the first week of the championships that she had her money on Wendy as the "Dark Horse". Now Wendy wants to put a bet on a "Dark Horse" for this weeks races and needs help from any of the members who may happen to know of a "Dark Horse" that she could perhaps take a punt on. Contact Wendy if you have some inside information on "Dark Horses".
A little incident reported to me today by Rosalie Dyer - "Somebody" (who was borrowing a cart to go out to collect the nearest the pins flags) thought that the cart was in reverse gear & ploughed through "Alans" hedge outside of the Pro Shop. (photo attached) Ooooops!!
Perhaps a nice little archway would look lovely there!

Golf - Tuesday 19th August 2008 - 3rd day Championships

Today was the third day of the ladies championships and we had the most perfect winter weather. The course is drying out & the fairways are running faster so we have all had to adjust to the change in conditions. It is a good test of golfing skills to adjust to changing conditions and the golf scores today indicate that. It was a mixed bag between good and bad so obviously some people adjust better than others. I think I fit into the "others" bracket as my score was rather ordinary today although I did play the 8th hole well by scoring a birdie and winning nearest the pin.
My playing partners today were Rosalie Dyer and Lesley Gregory and they were great company. Lesley played a very steady game after the first hole and came in winner of second division which is the next best thing to winning myself. We enjoyed being out there in the sunshine so it was a good day on the village green.
The event today was a single stroke and day three of the 2008 Ladies Championships so it was an important day for all our players to get themselves into a "winning" position for the final round to be held this Thursday 21st August 2008 and we had 80 starters.

Norma Cubis parred the 16th and was on the 17th for two to par that as well; Cheryl Davison had gobblers on the 8th and the 16th; June Bowen's partners reported that June was cranky when her putt hit Margaret Mackie's special "China" marker on its way to the hole & got diverted so making her miss the putt; my one and only highlight was scoring a birdie on the 8th hole and winning the nearest the pin.

Golf - Thursday 14th August - Day 2 Championships

Today it was a magnificent day for golf - blue sky and sunshine. The course is getting much more run on it now that it is drying out and the greens were very slick.

My playing partners today were again Margaret Pratt and Lyn Bates. We had some good holes with Margaret showing us the way by playing steady golf. Lyn played and parred the 10th hole beautifully & scored a gobbler and Margaret also had a gobbler on the 13th for a par and followed up by parring the 14th and 15th - some great inspiration for me.

The Event of the day was a stroke round and it was the second round of the 2008 Ladies Championships. We had 70 Starters.

We had some proud new grandparents showing off their new grandchildren this week: Cheryl Davison announced her new grandson - Zachary Eugene Davison (photo attached) and Bev Adams was proudly showing off her new granddaughter Charlotte at the club today (photos attached). Tomorrow is final preparation day for the Pro-Am weekend. Any members with a few hours to spare tomorrow morning ( Friday 15th August ) would be very welcome at the club to assist the F-Troop with raking and cleaning up around the course.

A reminder about the skins match to be held at approximately 2.00pm tomorrow afternoon between the pro's Andre Stoltz, Peter Senior, Anthony Payntor, Mark Churcher and Ricky Schmidt. Come along and walk the course with them. It is a very entertaining afternoon and of course the usual Friday night raffles and entertainment is on.

The Pro-Am Dinner
for Saturday night still has tickets available for a good nights entertainment. Book your tickets with the golf office tomorrow.

Golf - Tuesday 12th August 2008 - Championships Day 1

Today was the first day of our Ladies 2008 Championships. We were lucky enough to get a lovely sunny day and the course is drying out well which some of our scores have indicated.

My playing partners today were Margaret Pratt and Lyn Bates. They were great company and we had a lovely day in spite of the few little technical problems we had on some of the holes. These days are always good and we have had some really great stories about some of the things that have happened out on the course that would only happen on a stroke/championship day and I have to say I thought I had had a very ordinary day until I heard about some of them. Well we have to laugh or else we would cry. Those girls that played well, played very well & full credit to them for holding it all together under the pressure.

The Event of the day was a Stroke Event and the first day of our 4-Day 72 Hole 2008 Championships. We had 76 Starters,

SCORE BOARD
Attached is an image of the score board. You can click on the image and it will enlarge to viewing size. From there you can send a copy to your computer or you can print out a copy. To return to this page - press your backspace key.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Jan Fitzgerald had four strokes on the 13th; Bev Adams hit a huge shot on the 18th destined to be out of bounds, the ball hit a tree and it bounced beautifully back out onto the fairway (I call these shots "A" grade shots - us also-rans would have gone out of bounds); Shirley Daly had a gobbler on the 7th; Michele Martin had 40 strokes on the first nine holes, had a birdie on the 15th and a gobbler on the 13th; Kay Adams had birdies on the 14th & the 15th; Lorraine Linnert had a birdie on the 8th; Sheena Asken had a birdie on the 8th; Di Thomlinson had birdies on the 2nd and the 8th; Lyn Cruickshanks had a birdie/gobbler on the 6th; Di Beechey had 4 strokes on the 3rd; Yvonne Wilson parred the 14th; Norma Cubis parred the 8th and the 9th and generally played a nice steady game; Ronda Jordon had 16 shots on the 10th & staunchly held on to finish the match; Judy Verlander on the 8th hole was in the left hand bunker, shot out of that to behind the right hand bunker, 4 shots later she was back in the original bunker and took two shots to get out of that and then two putted - finally made it into the hole for 11 and very courageously finished the match; my highlight of the day was scoring a par with a gobbler shot on the 4th and scoring a birdie with a gobbler shot on the 8th. I am sure there many other stories of this nature as Championships can bring out the best an worst in our games. A good sense of humour is a good aid on these days.

Images attached: With my playing partners today - Margaret Pratt and Lyn Bates; The score board - at week 1; Kay Adams - Winner nett and Gross of Division 1; Di Beechey - Winner nett and gross of Division 2; Margaret Mackie - Gross Winner of Division 3; Garden at the water bubbler - getting prepared for new plants (watch this space for the results); Clyde Cruickshanks, Des Wilson & John Coddington - F-Troopers hard at work on Monday last repainting the practice putting green wall - how good is that!
