Golf - Tuesday 7th September 2010 - L'Oreal Day

We were lucky enough to have a perfect day for golf at last for our annual L'Oreal Day which is a very popular day with our members as the winners receive a package of L'Oreal Products.

After being washed out in August when this event was first scheduled it was good to have so many members playing today.

My playing partners were Leonie Casey & Glennis English & we did have some good highlights out there - the best of which was Leonie's birdie gobbler at the 9th. Leonie & Glennis are always good company & we had a fun day on the village green. The greens are grassing up well after the maintenance program last week but we had to hit the ball hard at the hole for an effective putt. It was very easy to leave a putt short - which is my story & I am sticking to it. We had some excellent scores in today so the slow greens did not worry our good players.

The Event of the day was a Ladies Single Stableford with Vets in conjunction. The day was sponsored by L'Oreal Products who provided the trophies for the winners today. Thank you L'Oreal !

F-Troop Monday 6th September 2010

F-Troop and the Greens Staff worked long and hard today to restore the course to some resemblance of tidiness. After yesterday's gale force winds tore through the course ripping off large branches, and millions of small twigs and leaves and spread them from one side of the course to the other. There was not a fairway that was not affected with some very large branches down that required a chain saw to remove. To make matters worse two of the greens were vandalized yesterday which took up more of the greens staff time to repair.

Many thanks to our volunteers that materialized this morning knowing that they had a huge job ahead of them in addition to further work to be done on the 18th tee garden fence. We had on hand Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Richard Casey, Peter Martin, Kerry Cubis, Des Wilson, Rosalie Dyer, Bev Way, Georgina Lamb & Di Beechey & we managed to inspire Felicity Mead to do some timber pick up for us at the 18th.

Working on the 18th tee garden fence we had Duncan Dyer, Geoff bridge & Richard Casey. They did a brilliant job & were almost able to get the fence completed bar a few more palings. The fence looks great & will look even better with a coating of protective oil to give it the finishing touch. We have a dam fed watering system in this garden that is being put in place by Peter Martin. Bev Way is the gardener looking after this garden & Bev will be adding some mulch this week for some summer protection.

Doing the hard yards on the timber raking and pick up were Kerry Cubis & Bev Way on the 1st to the 9th fairways and Peter Martin, Georgina Lamb & Di Beechey on the 10th to the 18th fairways. We raked & picked up what seemed to be tonnes of timber & rubbish & with the assistance of the Greens Staff managed to clear up the majority of the damage. It would have been impossible to stretch ourselves to every fairway so there is still a lot of clean up to do however the course looked vastly improved by the time we finished today. The Wedding Garden area looked like a bomb site yesterday & that has now been restored back to a tidy state by Georgina Lamb. The Ladies 3rd tee garden, the 5th tee garden & the 13th tee gardens also got a tidy up after the wild winds had caused a lot of mess in these areas. Rosalie Dyer did some good work at the garden at the back of the men's 10th tee & raking around the putting green.

After watching Georgina & myself raking up at the front of the clubhouse we inspired Felicity Mead to volunteer to help pick up some loose timber at the 18th - thanks Felicity ! Every bit of help is appreciated & a little less work for us to have to do.

F-Troop morning tea was very welcome today as we had all worked very hard all morning. Croissants, Jam & Cream and an assortment of mini muffins and fruit pastries were enjoyed by all. Thanks to John's staff for a lovely morning tea & a cheerio to Chef John who is on leave at the moment having a minor op. Best wishes John! It was good to meet up with Frank Whittington at morning tea as Frank is going to be a future F-Trooper when time allows him to join us. You are most welcome Frank & we are looking forward to you joining us on Monday mornings.

It is a shame that the gale force winds picked this week to arrive as this Thursday is to be the inspection day for the local garden competition. So much to do and so little time. My thanks and appreciation to all the F-Troopers who have more than pulled their weight giving me the assistance that I needed to get our gardens up to scratch in time for the competition. We have done our best under difficult circumstances with heavy rain & winds interfering with our schedules. We will know in a few weeks if we have done enough work.

The painting work has commenced at the Pro Shop and was supervised by Des Wilson. The painters have started at the "Merchandise" end of the shop & will work their way through to the Members Lounge and restrooms.

Golf - Sunday 5th September 2010 - Father's Day

The wild winds caused havoc today turning our neat and tidy course into a mess of leaves, sticks, branches and timber debris over which we had no control. We have so many trees that have grown & matured over the years that it is inevitable that in blustering winds there was going to be a lot of damage caused with falling timber. Amazingly nobody was hurt or injured during play & as the winds died a little in the later afternoon it was quite pleasant & warm out on the course & the scores were reasonable considering the debris we had to avoid during play.

Further to the end of play it was reported that we had once again been invaded by vandals who caused substantial damage to the 10th and 17th greens. This is very, very disappointing as the greens staff have had the greens to superb condition & have just completed maintenance on them this week. Shame on these vandals who have caused this unnecessary damage.

We had a wedding celebration in the wedding garden today which went ahead as scheduled as we had some blue sky and sunshine for a bonus and the Bride and Groom chose to ignore the windy weather & enjoy their special day. The wedding garden area was in pristine condition yesterday awaiting the wedding so it was good that the Bride & groom went ahead with their garden wedding regardless of the wind and damage caused. The Magnolia Room was beautifully decorated for the wedding celebrations later that evening (photos attached) by which time the wild winds would have been forgotten

The Golf Event of the day was a Single Stableford for Men and Ladies + Team 1 x 2 x 3.

Being Father's Day we had reduced numbers of players and the wild winds put off a lot of others.

We had 51 starters with 5 visitors from Everglades, Terrigal & Toukley.

Our playing partners were Graham & Anne Smith ( my brother and sister-in-law) & we had a really good day regardless of the wild winds. We played the back 9 first & spent a lot of time chasing our buggies and hats when they were taken off by the wind. We had a lot of highlights with Graham scoring a lovely 40 points and Anne playing a really good round of golf considering she had not picked up her clubs since last January.

We had some lovely gentle rain overnight & again later in the day which was just what our greenkeeper was wanting to water in the newly sanded greens. Most of the girls got their golf game in without getting too wet and the singles knockout matches were played early so they were not effected with the rain. Once again we had some great scores coming in with 38 points not even winning a ball.

The Event of the day was a Single Stableford Over the Field and we had 22 starters with visitors Noela Hibbert, Margaret Thorp & Denise Barr from Terrigal.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Jan Walker had a birdie 4/5 on the 6th, scored 38 points (but did not win a ball); Sharon Anderson hit a huge drive off the 15th tee which was almost in danger of going in the water; Helen Stuart had a great 41 points - the best she has played for a while; Lesley Gregory also played well for her 41 points. The course has got a lot of run even after last night's rain which has reflected in all the good scoring and traditionally there are always some big scoring during green maintenance - I think we find it easier to putt through the sand as we just have to hit at the hole without any need to "read" the green.
