Golf - Friday 6th August 2010

Just what the Doctor ordered - another warm sunny day with a bit of wind to help dry out the course. We had a lot of players out enjoying the course today which is how it should be.

In case you think that I spend all my life at the golf course I have attached some photos of my garden work at home today before doing some more painting of the Pro Shop Buggy Room walls.

The Pro Shop renovations are on schedule but there is a lot more heavy work to be done in the next couple of weeks after which you will have a really good overview of the changes in the presentation of the Pro Shop.

We sent in our entry form for the GCC Garden Competition today so you will be seeing a lot of action in the gardens in the next six weeks (calling on all of my F-Troop gardeners and Adopt-a-Garden Members to rally for the garden inspection expected about the middle of September). We won the "Best Commercial Garden" category in last year's competition which was great and a credit to all our volunteer gardeners who put in so much time throughout the year.

The Golf Event of the day was a Single Stableford for Men and Ladies.

We had 141 starters with 11 visitors from Belmont, Charlestown, Nelsons Bay, Riverside Oaks, South West Rocks, Terrigal, Toukley & Waratah.

Golf - Thursday 5th August 2010

Two days of sunshine - what a bonus! The course has appreciated the break from further rain but it was still heavy going with some wet patches yet to repair. We had some good scores in today so there were some people that had no trouble with the course conditions. Carts were allowed on today.

F-Troopers put in a good days work today at the Pro Shop renovating the buggy rooms. We had George Foster, Mark Stimpson, Des Wilson & Peter Martin putting in some hard yards. I was handed a paint brush at 8 o'clock this morning and still had it in my hand at 4.30 pm. We did make some good progress with the finishing touches for the buggy rooms. The F-Troopers have been removing panelling from the main part of the Pro Shop & recycled it for no cost into the buggy rooms. A coat of paint to freshen the look & a few new "Softening karma" features to give some personality to the rooms. The new buggy room only needs to have the battery shelving & brackets tidied up & we will be ready for traffic in that room next week. The other buggy room has had it's first coat of paint with some work to be done on the flooring next week.

Yvonne & Des Wilson also put some hard yards in on the gardens today working on the hydrangeas at the 3rd and at the gardens at the 14th & including some fertilizing for me. Thanks Des & Yvonne.

The Golf Event of the day was a Ladies Single Stableford - Over the Field and we had 33 starters with visitors from Terrigal.

We had some sunshine at last which will help to dry out the course. Our numbers were down today due to the course being too wet from the recent deluge to allow carts onto the course.

The Event of the day was a Men's Single Stableford + Team Event.

We had 140 starters with 6 visitors from Everglades, PGA, Terrigal, Wyong & Kempsey.

Golf - Thursday 3rd August 2010

There is nothing like an awful wet day to get inside projects done & F-Troopers Martin Gallagher & Peter Martin got to work in the Pro Shop dismantling one of the walls that is to be replaced & then painted the new buggy room walls & also the other buggy room got it's first coat of paint on some of the walls which has made it look much larger & brighter.

We have also added some "Karma" decorations to the new buggy room to soften the look.

Our Ladies Golf Clubs will appreciate 'resting' in this calming atmosphere after being cleaned and

gently parked by our Pro Shop staff.

Member Graham Brown put his skills to work on the counter shop floor. Graham & his business partner laid the flooring today using floor tiles made from recycled PVC which looks very attractive & will be a very practical flooring for this well used area.

The rest of the Pro Shop renovations are going well with the outline becoming clearer every day & progress is being made in all directions. Members Dave Flanagan (builder) and John Coddington (electrician) have been putting in sterling efforts.

Des Wilson has been a busy man acting as the Project Manager to ensure that things keep moving. Thanks for your efforts Des.

There has been a lot of old carpet offcuts and discarded carpet that is going to be put to use as weed matting in some of our gardens in an effort to keep maintenance to a minimum. F-Troop has started on one of the gardens at the front garden & once the carpet is fitted in place it will be covered by woodchip to restore a tidy look which will hopefully hold for a good amount of time & free up our F-Troopers for more important tasks than weeding.

AS FOR GOLF - Well, there wasn't any - due to the woeful weather we have had overnight and this morning. We had something like half an inch of rain overnight & some really wild winds. The showers continued for most of the morning after which the sun finally made an appearance.

Hopefully we will have some sunshine and wind over the next few days to help dry out the water logged course.

The L'Oreal Day that was to be held today has been postponed until Tuesday 7th September 2010.

The Match Committee has postponed the Singles Knock Out that was due to be played this Thursday 5th August 2010. The next round in this event will be held on Thursday 26th August 2010.

GOLF TOMORROW - At last call the course will be open. Golf will be on, with preferred lies but no carts will be allowed. This decision will be subject to review early tomorrow morning so it would be best to check with the Pro Shop prior to play.

F-Troop Monday 2nd August 2010

It was a testing day weather wise with a freezing cold wind which was super cold at 7.00am in the morning & did not improve much during the morning. That did not put off our F-Troop workers and we had 12 helpers keen to contribute.

Martin Gallagher, Geoff Bridge, Duncan Dyer & Peter Murphy took care of removing some camphor laurels at the 2nd green and the black wattle tree at the 6th that had a white ant problem.

Peter Martin, Bruce White, George Foster, Richard Casey, Mark Stimpson & Des Wilson all set to work in the Pro Shop completing some wall panelling, shelving, carpet removal and repair of the brick walls. Later they were assisted with some cleaning up by Georgina Lamb & Leonie Casey.

Georgina & I started the day re potting one of the plants at the front, sweeping & vacuuming the front entry, cleaning down the outside furniture, cleaning up the front steps & front carpark.

We treated the garden at the 1st with seasol, raked and cleaned up at the 1st & 10th tees, the Wedding Garden area and the entry from the clubhouse to the tees. We made good use of the carpet that had been taken up off the Pro Shop floor and placed it in the front gardens to use as weed matting. Georgina swept & vacuumed the golf office & we all helped out in the Pro Shop where possible.

Morning tea was a little cramped today in the Spike Bar but it was too cold to sit outside. Chef John provided us with fruit pastries still warm from the oven which was appreciated by everyone. Thanks John ! We welcomed Peter Murphy back to F-Troop after his break. Nice to have you back Peter!

The course was still very wet so we were limited to what vehicles could be taken out on the course so our loose timber pick ups will need to be done next week when hopefully this windy weather like we have had today will dry the course out quickly. The up side of that was that we had more workers that we could allocate to the Pro Shop Renovations which was a big help to progressing the finishing touches to the new buggy room. Golf - Sunday 1st August 2010

We had a lovely day at the Gosford Golf Course today - hitting off a little later than scheduled but still just managing to get in before the last rays of sunshine. The weather was fine and sunny with some gusty winds from time to time. Overall it was very pleasant out on the course - even though we had some very wet patches from the recent downpours, the course was in great condition considering the constant rain. Course conditions were preferred lies throughout the green and carts were allowed.

Our playing partners today were John & Julie Hazzard who were great company and they both played really well & they made our day by coming home winners of the Mixed Irish 2 Ball Event.

The Event of the day was an Irish 2 Ball + Singles Mixed Men and Ladies.

We had 120 starters with 10 visitors from Berkeley Park, Byron Bay, Muirfield, PGA, Terrigal, Toukley, Tuggerah Lakes & Wyong.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Jan Van Den Berg had a birdie 2/4 on the 14th with a great chip into the hole from at least 10 metres; Tania Burt had 5/4 on the 2nd; Peter Laybutt had a birdie on the 4th; Kath Small had two 4 pointers; Lorraine Bignall parred out of the bunker on the 8th and had a 4/4 on the 1st; Col Matterson had birdies on the 2nd and the 18th; Ron Puiatti had a birdie on the 15th; George Foster had a birdie on the 2nd and the boys beat the girls for the keno ticket; Mark Stimpson had a birdie on the 8th; Doris Morris scored a nice 35 points using her magic "Sunday" putter; Bert Jordon had a nice steady game for his 40 points; Des Wilson had no wipes; Duncan Dyer had 4 pointers at the 7th and the 17th & the boys won the keno ticket; Yvonne Wilson had a 4 pointer on the 12th & had no wipes; John Hazzard played a nice steady game & Julie timed her 3 pointers well to win them the mixed event.

Other highlights of the day:

Wes Bourne from Tuggerah Lakes played at our course today & sends his regards to Noel Annand.

Another lovely grandchild has arrived - Lynda & Ian Hartley are the proud grandparents of a new grand daughter Lily Rose Sullivan - born 21st June 2010 in Tasmania, 9 lb 1 oz, 58 cms.
