New vertical garden in place at the 1st tee donated by F-Trooper Ron Gowing.

This morning we had 12 volunteers to contribute to our projects.

On hand was Sam Knox, Trevor Harrison, Kevin O’Brien, Toddy, Steve Robinson, Don Nicholls, Peter Martin, Nigel Asken, John Hollebon, Ron Gowing, Di Beechey and Jan Martin.

Projects worked on today were Tree Maintenance at the back of the clubhouse, tidy up of car park, loose timber and rubbish pick up around the course, hedge maintenance, installation of vertical garden at the 1st tee, tidy up underneath the clubhouse, tidy up of paths in front of clubhouse, 1st and 10th tees, wedding garden and practice nets, tidy up of Camellia Way from the 17th to the 18th, cleaning of the bush toilets, tidy up of the greenspace gardens at the 14th, tidy up of the 6th tranquility garden.

We were ready to appreciate Morning Tea of fresh sandwiches after a hard mornings work in very humid heat.

The Late Jeff Nash

 It is with great sadness that I report on the passing of Jeff Nash who has been fighting a brain cancer.  

Gosford Members will remember Jeff and Margaret Nash who both lost their battles with cancer. 

The celebration of Jeff’s life will be held at 3 pm on 31st January 2022 at Gregson and Weight, 5 Gregson Place, Caloundra. A wake will be held at Pelican Waters Golf Resort, Mahogany Drive, in the 19th hole Sports Bar from 4.00 PM. There are no covid restrictions at either of these venues.

It was another very humid day so we appreciated morning tea of fresh sandwiches supplied by the club.

My old golf shoes that I chose to wear because the course was wet - that sadly were past their use by date and my replacement bargain buys from the Pro Shop.

Firstly before I report on the results I need to explain my 12 points score today. Even though the scores were surprisingly low today because of the wet condition of the course I was further restricted by having the sole of one of my golf shoes disintegrate on the 1st hole - closely followed by the second shoe. This left me with a choice of going barefoot (not happening) or hanging out without playing until we finished the 9th hole. At that point a hurried purchase of a pair of Footjoy shoes at the Pro Shop for a bargain buy of $30 set me back on a good path to continue golf where I had as much trouble as everyone else.

Our playing partners today were Laurie and Denise Bentlin who were great company. Laurie parred the 13th and Denise parred the 16th which were good highlights.

Men’s Pennant's Results - Sunday 23rd January 2022

Another great day in the office this week. We played the Mountain Men at Everglades.

 

A grade were comfortable all day and won 6 to 1. Well done to Michael McLaren who played his first match with us and won well 4 and 3. Our young guns are big hitters as illustrated by Dean Stevens’ drive on the 305 metre 9^th hole. This is a very tight hole and Dean had a go and left his ball just off the green as can been seen in the photo.

 

The B Grade match was close early but the boys finished strongly for a 3 nil win. Luke and Dean won 6 and 5 and after being behind for most of the day Brett and Graham won 2 and 1 and Bill and Tim left it until the last to win 1 up.

 

C grade was the contest of the day. Can you pick the star of the day from the photo. It was none other than George Lee also known as wax on wax off. George was playing his first match with us and was calm all day. George and Hayden were 2 down with 4 to go and combined well to win the 15^th. George then hits the 16^th green and two putts to win the hole. Next hole square and its on to the 18^th. Hayden sinks a 25 footer to  take the pressure off George who then sinks his 20 footer. Mangrove were left a 5 footer to half the hole and in true mountain men fashion they sunk the putt. A great match and a squared result for our C grade team.

We had a steamy day for our F-Troop project work today (thought we were in QLD or Bali.

Projects worked on today were tree maintenance, Loose Timber and rubbish clean up, Hedge maintenance, garden weeding, clean up of paths in front of the clubhouse, 1st and 10th tees, wedding garden and practice nets, repair of fence along the 18th fairway, clean out of the weeds at the 13th dam, clean up of clubhouse area and car park, trimming of the tibouchina on the 2nd fairway, cleaning of the bush of Bush Toilets, planting in of the rock orchids at the 14th greenspace garden, tidy up of gardens and dead heading of agapanthus.

Men’s Pennants Results - Sunday 16th January 2022

Pennants commenced this week and we played Toukley at Breakers. Toukley are always one of the favourites to win the title

 

Gosford B and C grades had comfortable wins 2/1. We had a few new guys who played strong and will only improve with more matches under their belts.

 

Gosford A grade went so close going down 4/3.  Toukley have some of the best pennant players on the Coast and I think only a lack of experience around the tight Breakers course cost us a victory.

 

All grades are right up winning their respective titles.

Working on a very wet course today we did manage to get some good work done.

On hand we had Sam Knox, Duncan Dyer, Trevor Harrison, Kevin O’Brien, Rob Benson, Nigel Asken, Peter Martin, Ron Gowing, John Hollebon, Di Beechey and Jan Martin.

Projects worked on today were tree maintenance, rubbish and loose timber and rubbish pick up, hedge maintenance, purchase of new garden soil, cleaning paths underneath the clubhouse, 1st and 10th tees, wedding garden and practice nets, weeding of gardens at the 10th tee, replacing potted plants at the wedding garden (Kevin (muscles) O’Brien was called on to empty the pots in preparation for new plants), removal of weeds from the 3rd dam, dead heading of Agapanthus, weeding garden at the 2nd tee, cleaning of the bush toilets, spider and ant treatment at the bush toilets, clean up of the greenspace gardens.

Morning tea was appreciated after a hard morning’s work.

Golf - Sunday 9th January 2022

 It was a hard day at the office today (for some) - not that it was raining but mainly water on the course and I managed to find every puddle.

Our playing partners were Ray and Carolyn Buttsworth and they were great company encouraging us all the way. The boys beat the girls for the Keno ticket but our main two highlights were two birdie shots, firstly from Carolyn at the 8th who chipped 60 feet into the hole and then Peter challenged back with a birdie putt off the green at the 14th. Ray kept us amused with a perfect drive off the 17th tee that went right between the “V” in the trees on the left of the fairway.

Evacuation from Gosford Golf Club after fire alarms had got us moving out to the car park as a precautionary to danger in the clubhouse.  We were all calm throughout the event, returning to the Clubhouse soon after to finish our dinners and drinks and in our case to win a seafood platter in the raffle.

F-Troop was full on activity with 12 volunteers which was great considering it was a Public Holliday.

Projects worked on today were loose timber and rubbish pick up around the course, clearing of fallen branches, clean up along the fence line at the 1st, trimming of garden in front of the clubhouse, removal of potted plant at the Wedding Garden, cleaning of the paths at the front of the clubhouse, 1st and 10th tees, wedding garden and practice nets, clean up of weed at the dams, hedge maintenance, finish off weeding the garden at the 2nd green, tidy up of the tranquility garden at the 6th, cleaning of the bush toilets, watering and weeding the greenspace garden at the 14th.

Morning tea of fresh cut sandwiches was well earned today.
