Golf - Thursday 23rd October 2008

Another challenging day for golf - cold, windy & wet but how green is our course. The new work must be making a difference as we can play in the wet with no threat of course closure as it used to be in the past. Everything is thriving with steady amounts of regular rainfall. The hot summer months to come will be a testing point.
I was very impressed with the signs that Wally Johnston has made and donated to the club. Thanks Wally! Visitors will not get lost and confused with the starting tees and players should have no trouble focusing on the "No chipping to the green" sign even if they are not wearing their glasses. There is a dedicated chipping area at the back of the practice nets.
Wayne Tomkinson delivered the Laciandra 'Jules' Tibouchinas for the Wedding Garden today & they were planted immediately. These plants finish off the front corner of the garden & should fill out to make a lovely display on maturity. Thanks Wayne!
With Members like Wally & Wayne WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
The event of the day was a Single Stableford and we had 16 diehard starters.
RESULTS:
WINNER: Jan Fitzgerald - 36 points on a countback
RUNNER UP: Margaret Nichols - 36 points

DIVISION 1: Kathy Small

F-Troop - Monday 20th October 2008

Now I ask you - HOW GOOD IS OUR F-TROOP?
Today we had 13 workers on hand - Warren Gray, Spencer Walklate, Duncan Dyer, Peter Martin, Des Wilson, Neil Hancock, Garry Trigg, George Foster, Yvonne Wilson, Alvin Kan, Di Beechey, Martin Gallagher (pre-work organizer) and myself.
Today's effort was exceptional with some extra effort required from all our participants to remove a large pine tree that had been struck by lightning on Sunday night.
Martin Galligher started the team off early in the morning before needing to leave for his paid occupation.
The team, led by Duncan Dyer & his trusty chain saw, did the most impressive job of bringing down & removing a huge pine tree between the 13th & 7th fairways. I was in awe of their expertise - the tree came down to expectations & it was removed from the fairway with a lot of effort from Duncan Dyer & Peter Martin on chainsaws (Martin Gallagher was otherwise occupied at his paid work), Neil Hancock, Des Wilson & Spencer Walklate together with the bobcat manouvered by our trusty ground staff.
In addition to that Duncan Dyer and his team brought down a large nuisance Camphor Laurel on the right hand side of the fairway & removed it very efficiently.
Peter Martin & Des Wilson & myself dedicated ourselves to some raking up on the 7th fairway, the 7th tee. It was at that time that I noticed fresh wood splinters on the ground when we were working. Like Hansel & Gretal I followed the woodchips to the upper branches of a tree (photo attached) and realised that a large pine tree had been hit by lightning and it had split from the base of the tree to it's uppermost trunk (some 30 foot or more). We called Duncan Dyer's attention to it & he could see it from the other side of the fairway. We declared the tree absolutely dangerous - in windy conditions it would have collapsed. Duncan called the troops together ordering ropes and an extra chain saw. The troops rallied and you can see the results on the photos. Stirling job guys. I was impressed & I think a lot of the members should be. The savings in time alone of the greenkeeping staff makes you worth your weight in gold. Thanks guys!
Other great work today was the cleaning up along the 6th fairway gutter & surroundings right along to the 14th tee. Peter Martin, Di Beechey & Warren Gray did a fantastic job. I have never seen that area looking better. Warren Gray & Peter Martin did a great job on the rubbish removal to the dumping area.
Des & Yvonne Wilson, together with some energetic digging from Alvin Kan prepared the 15th tee planning for the future planting of "Bird of Paridise" plants. Des & Yvonne did some fertilizing and watering of their adopt-a-gardens.
Garry Trigg did some hard yards on the rough cutter & was still working well past the morning tea bell. Thanks Garry - great job!
As I stayed mainly in the one area today I may have missed some of our workers for which I appologise if that happened.
I have some acknowledgements to make to our members who are very generously assisting by donating plants that are required for our garden beautification. Wayne Tomkinson has impressed me no end by donating the six "Jules" Laciandras (Tibouchinas) that we required to complete the Wedding Garden. In addition to that he has donated 100 petunia plants to replace the pansies in the front walkway gardens for the summer months. In addition to that Wayne has donated some more plants required for the BBQ garden. Thank you Wayne. With a this combination of member participation WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
We have got some further donations in the making one of which is some "Kangaroo Paws" for the 6th Native Garden.
Martin Gallaher & I have prepared a list of trees, shrubs, hedges, plants and native grasses that would be suitable for our Golf Course. If anyone feels inclined to donate a plant/plants & would like to choose from that list - you would be most welcome. Don't forget that you can stock up now for next winter by buying our pre-cut and bagged timber. Tell all your friends that have wood fires. - only $10 per bag going towards our course beautification.
As most of you would be aware we did make the finals of the Gosford City Garden Competition for the more than 1000 sq metres gardens and also the Best Theme Garden. That was against some pretty fierce competition. Next year we plan on taking out the big prizes.
With the new fairway system in place it is now getting possible to get water to places that were previously not available to town water. We need some more volunteers for the Adopt-A-Garden Scheme now so that each of the new furbished gardens can get the TLC that they deserve.
Next Monday the F-Troop cannot work on the course - so the plan is that we clean up along the front fenceline of the course (Racecourse Road) from the front entrance right through to the second tee - both inside and outside of the fence. This is quite a big job and will require as many hands on deck as possible as the area is quite substancial. We are always looking for more volunteers - so come along and lend a hand - even if it can only be for a few hours.
Every little bit helps - and YES! YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

F-Troop - Monday 13th October 2008

Today was another successful F-Troop day with 13 willing volunteers doing a wonderful job. The troops covered jobs like filling in trenches, collecting loose timber and rubbish, weeding, watering, felling of dead/diseased trees and rough cutting. Those that I saw at work were George Foster; Spencer Walklate; Garry Trigg; Martin Gallagher; Neil Hancock; Doug Incoll; Ray Presdee; Peter Martin; Warren Gray; Anne Burgess; Duncan Dyer and Bert Brink - all contributing to the beautification of the course.
Martin Gallagher did a great job of organising the groups into action & much was achieved. Peter managed to get the watering system on the 18th tee garden into working mode ( that will impress Bev Way); Duncan Dyer & his crew made short work of the tree felling on the 9th; George Foster & Garry Trigg worked on the rough cutters. The strong men of F-Troop helped me by placing the feature rocks onto the second tee garden and carried away all the deadwood & rubbish from the second tee area. I was very excited today to be able to get a hose running from the new fairway watering system to the second tee shade garden which means that we can easily get water to this garden in the long hot stretches of summer. (Enoni will be impressed).

Gosford Golf Club Open Amateur Report - Sunday 5th October 2008

Under leaden skies and a damp track Gosford Golf Club hosted its annual Open Amateur Tournament and Orange Bowl Teams Event for 2008 on Sunday 5th October 2008.
Two Gosford Pennant players in Steve Geary and Dan Snelson finished with even par 71 to go into a 4 hole playoff. After 4 holes of playoff Steve Geary finished the victor to claim the Open Amateur from his brother-in-law Dan.
The teams Event, known as the Orange Bowl, was won by 4 Gosford Members in Dan and Mark Snelson, Steve Geary and the son of Gosford's Professional Mark Churcher, Zac aged 15.
Winner of the Seniors Scratch Event was Noel Wood from the Picton Golf Club while Barry Bray from the Liverpool Golf Club was the winner of the Seniors Nett Event.
While the field was not a big one by any means it is hoped that golfers from around the central Coast will start to support this event in the future so that it can restore itself to the glamour event it was several years ago when big fields were the order of the day.
Gosford Captain, Mark Stimpson, thanked those that did play on the day and hoped that they would be back next year.

F-Troop work - Friday 3rd October 2008

It was a very hot day but that did not stop the F-Troopers at work. Des & Yvonne Wilson helped me to split the final pots of orchids & place them in gardens at the 14th tee bush toilets.
We have now found a home for all the donated orchids and I thank everyone who has contributed to this project.
Peter got busy at Bev Way's garden at the 18th by raising the watering system so that it can be repaired & sprinklers placed in the right positions. This is the first garden on the course that has it's own easy-use watering system that in connected to the new fairway watering system. Thanks to David, our greenkeeper for connecting the garden to the system. You may have noticed that this garden has improved leaps and bounds since the rabbit proof fence was put in place and we have been able to water in the hot weather. The rabbit proof fence is very basic & was put up as a matter of necessity. A more attractive type of fence would be desirable and I am open to suggestions & donors for this project.
Martin Gallagher was doing his roster on the rough cutter this morning.
Images attached: Martin on the rough cutter at the 18th; Bev Way's garden - complete with new orchid placements; Des & Yvonne at work on the new orchid gardens at the 14th; various photos of the new orchid gardens.
My thanks to the F-Troopers who give their time so generously.

Golf - Thursday 2nd October 2008

Today was a hot & sunny day which must have put off some our players as we only had 24 starters which is a poor field when the course is playing so well. The scores today are an indication of how well the course is playing and I wish I could have been part of it.
I did not get any photos of our winners as it was all over by the time I arrived at the club.
The event of the day was a single stableford.
RESULTS:
DIVISION 1:
WINNER: Rosie Judd - 44 points
RUNNER UP: Judy Verlander - 42 points
3RD: Val Scott - 41 points
Balls went to Fay Bailey and Lyn Cruickshanks (39 points on a countback).
NEAREST THE PINS: 14th hole: Faye Levenspiel; 14th hole: Val Scott
CCR: 73 (36 points)
Yesterday I was accompanied on a tour of the course by Martin Gallagher & Jacob from the Narara Valley Nursery. Jakob is giving us some horticultural advice on the plants & trees suitable for our course and was good enough to give a few hours of his time & some invaluable advice.
(photo attached of Martin & Jakob dicussing the merits of some of trees on the course)
Attached is a photo of Alvin Kan presenting Gus MacDonald with his Monthly Medal trophy recently.
Attached is a photo of more of our unsung heroes - and that is the volunteers who go out and mark the GUR areas on the course. Today I spotted Col Matterson & Mark Stimpson donating their time for our benefit.
The top photo was taken from the club balcony late this afternoon. The course looked fantastic & there were some social players out there enjoying a late afternoon game. Our spot on the balcony was not hard to take either.
