Golf - Tuesday 29th September 2009

Today we were blessed with perfect weather for our very important MARK CHURCHER DAY.
This popular day is always looked forward to and is keenly contested for the honour of winning the "Mark Churcher Day" trophy which is a tradition originally started years ago when Mark's father, Peter Churcher was professional at our club. Trophies on the day were donated by Mark Churcher. Today we had 79 starters with visitors from Everglades, Terrigal and Tuggerah Lakes.
The rules this year were :
for Division one: Playing stroke off the "Blue" markers.
for divisions two and three: playing stableford from the "White" markers.
My playing partners were Margaret Maclachlan and Judy Ruitenberg & we had a lovely day. It was very interesting hitting off from the "Blue" markers & actually good fun to do something different. Some of the holes were more challenging than others, the 'water' holes especially challenging. It bought the best out in a lot of our players as you can see by the results.
RESULTS:
DIVISION 1 - STROKE
WINNER: Di Thomlinson - 71 nett
RUNNER UP: Linda Rogers - 74 nett on a countback
GROSS WINNER: Di Thomlinson - 84 gross

A red bellied snake was seen near the concrete path at the 18th - so beware!

F-Troop Monday 28th September 2009

When we arrived for F-Troop duty early this morning the troopers were already hard at work sharpening the chain saws for a busy day cleaning up fallen branches and trees. We had two ute's and a tractor & tray in full use for four hours picking up loose timber & fallen trees. The troopers worked hard all morning. We could not get around the whole course but the volume we did pick up was awesome.
We had 11 troopers on duty today and those that I saw were Duncan Dyer, Geoff Bridge, Martin Gallagher, Des Wilson, Spencer Walklate, Garry Trigg, Peter Martin, Warren Gray, George Foster & Julie Hazzard.
Duncan Dyer, Spencer Walklate, Martin Gallagher & Geoff Bridge took care of the tree lopping & some pick up while Des Wilson, Peter Martin, Warren Gray, George Foster & Garry Trigg did the loose timber pick up. Julie Hazzard repotted some of the indoor plants.
I managed to sort out some of the watering systems & got the gardens at the 12th, 13th & 17th well watered with the big hoses connected to the ringmain.
Martin Gallagher identified some of the nuisance camphour Laurel trees & tree stumps that should be removed in the future.
Peter Martin completed the water system set up at the 18th tee garden so that we can now use the system to both run a hose to the bouganvillias & camelias & to the garden sprayer system for Bev Way's garden. Anne Burgess and Judy Hughes will be happy that they can now run a hose to their shrubs which previously they have had to water by bucket. That will give their gardens some chance of survival this summer.
Members would have noticed the damage done to the new garden at the Ladies 3rd tee by the resident cockatoos. It looks like we will need to get hold of some bird netting to protect this garden until it matures. The wild winds also brought down the big tree fern at the back of the Men's 10th tee and we lost a tree in the garden at the back of the 6th tee. It has been a rather damaging week all around for our grounds.
The Presentation for the Garden Competition will be held this Thursday Evening so it will be nice if we get a mention.
YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Sunday 27th September 2009 - Mixed Team Series

Today was one of the most popular golf events of our programme being the Final Round of the Mixed Team Series which has been held over a 3 month period. It is a keenly contested event with the 3rd round event being sponsored by "Harris & Adams Smash Repairs" Col and Kay Adams.
The weather was not kind to us with wild winds predominating the day but at least we did not have to contend with dust. Anyone with great scores today deserved their accolades as the wind hardly let up all day. As you can see by the results there were some good scores and highlights during the day. During the match a large tree came crashing down between the 7th and 13th fairways. We heard the noise and saw the dust fly up from several fairways away. Thankfully no one was underneath at the time. (photo attached)
We were one short in our team as Ian Mitchell was recovering from eye surgery so today Iris Talbot was our support crew and we did the best we could - but not good enough to catch the leaders who streaked home with daylight behind them.

Gosford Golfers at Asquith Thursday 24th September 2009

A group of 18 Lady golfers from Gosford participated in the Asquith Vets Open Day. We were fortunate enough to get perfect weather (after yesterday's wild dust storms) & we had a very pleasant day finding our way around the course (with difficulty at times) as the course is not too clearly marked especially for cart use. It was a challenging and interesting course and our hosts were very friendly and welcoming. The club put on an excellant light lunch for about 130 guests
and had plenty of prizes on the day. We had mixed fortunes with our golf but the company was great. My playing partners today were Julie Hazzard, Christine Drakeford & June Bowen & we had a very enjoyable day.

Golf - Wednesday 23rd September 2009

The wild dust storm caused havock across the Central Coast today throwing most outdoor activities into chaos. That did not stop some of our diehard players from getting out on the course and to come in with some good scores.

I was out on the course today planting out some agapanthus plants in our gardens (photos attached) and saw the damage the wild dust storm was doing including the destruction of our large tree fern at the back of the Men's 10th tee.(photo attached)

The Event of the day was a Men's Single Stableford + Teams Event.

We had 76 starters and 4 visitors from Everglades.
