Gosford Golfers at Byron Bay Thursday 28th January 2010

We had a lovely day of golf at the Byron Bay Golf course. Our playing partners were Bob & Glennis English & we had a fun day. The boys won the keno ticket as Peter had a really good game & Bob started off with two three pointers and a two pointer which is not bad for someone who is not a regular golfer. Glennis nearly got a birdie and I had a nice couple of pars. It is a lovely course with great greens. The course was a little drier than I remembered it from last year. They have many beautiful concrete paths around the course and use a lot of native grasses around the gardens & dams.
Our other group was Trevor Andrews, Garry Morris & George Brand. They had a great day also and enjoyed the course. Garry & George are not regular golfers and played very well on the day considering they had not played for a long while.

F-Troop Monday 25th January 2010

F-Troopers put in another days magnificent work in my absence. Thanks Troopers!

Those present today were Warren Gray, Geoff Bridge, Duncan Dyer, Arthur Verlander, Bert brink, Martin Gallagher, Garry Trigg, Di Beechey, Anne Burgess and Judy Hughes.

The troopers loaded up 2 utes and a trailer with mulch for the 6th garden and had to come back for more. It was a huge job - well done troopers. In addition the the gardens on the 6th additional gardens mulched were the back of the 5th tee, 14th & 15th gardens. This mulch is important to keep our gardens moist and weed free during the summer months.

Martin & Geoff watered the gardens around the putting green.

Di Beechey cleaned up around the Clubhouse.

Garry Trigg did some roughcutting.

Anne Burgess and Judy Hughes put the protective fencing around the new camelias planted between the 17th green and the 18th tee. That area will look beautiful when the camelias mature (if we can keep the rabbits away)

I understand that the roadbase has been delivered so that we can begin the repair the potholes in the paths. We need as much help as possible for this job as many hands make light work.

If you would like to help with this project please meet up with the F-Troopers at the Greenkeepers shed at 7.15am next Monday.
Morning tea will make it worth your while. Our in-house chefs have been excelling themselves as you can see by the above photo. We can't wait to see what treats await us next week.

Many thanks to our regular troopers who turn up just about every week. Your help is invaluable.

My thanks to Martin Gallagher for emailing me the F-Troop report and photos so I could update the blog.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Happy Australia Day from beautiful Byron Bay!!!!!

The Blogger is taking some R & R so the blog will be on hold until some time in the first week of February 2010.

The golf results will be back dated at that time. If you have any good photos or highlights of the golf in the meantime please email them to me so I can include them in the reports.

Happy golfing in the intermission.

It was a lovely day for golf today and I would have expected a lot more ladies to take advantage of the perfect conditions on our course. We had a really nice breeze that kept the temperature to a comfortable level for golf so we all had a very enjoyable day.
My playing partners today were Rosalie Dyer and Fay Bailey & we had a good day out on the course with mixed fortunes. We did have some good highlights with all of us scoring 3 pointers at some stage. Rosalie had a par of the 1st hole which was a good start for the day. Fay had a nice par on the 15th; my highlight was a handy 3 pointer on the 17th when my luck was running out.

F-Troop - Monday 18th January 2010

The F-Troopers really worked hard today as we had a lot of tasks on the list and not a huge amount of helpers. Those that I saw were Geoff Bridge, Martin Gallagher, Peter Martin, Des Wilson, Arthur Verlander, Warren Gray, Bert Brink, Garry Trigg, Jan Walker, Di Beechey, and Yvonne Wilson. It was worth coming though as our chef Nick excelled himself this morning by providing us with fresh scones with Jam & Cream for morning tea. Yum! Thanks Nick!

We started the morning shortly after 7.00 am by putting in place the new table & chairs donated by Peter & Margaret Davidson which Peter delivered this morning. We were very impressed with the quality of the donation and decided that it was too good for use out on the course & should be used for the Members comfort under the covered area in front of the clubhouse. A coat or two of protective varnish will bring it up a treat and I noticed this morning at morning tea time that the table was already in use. Thanks Peter & Margaret on behalf of all the Members.

The F-Troopers then all scattered to their various tasks.

Warren Gray, Bert Brink, Arthur Verlander, Di Beechey and myself transferred out fertilizer and mulch to the gardens at the 12th, 13th and 2nd & completed spreading the gardens for protection from the summer heat. Warren & Arthur picked up timber & rubbish from around the course. Di Beechey raked the paths around the 2nd.

Martin Gallagher and Geoff Bridge connected the auger to the tractor & dug 22 holes at the new "Camelia Way" (the path that leads from the 17th green to the 18th tee) so that we can mass plant camelias. We purchased a metre of good garden soil to give the camelias a good start & Peter, Di Beechey & I planted & watered the plants in. Hopefully the rabbits will not eat them before Anne Burgess can get there with some protective fencing. The 20 odd camelias we did plant were donated by Anne Burgess from her own garden. If we can get these to grow we will have a lovely avenue of camelias down each side of the path that join with the existing camelias in that area.

Martin & Geoff then went to the 15th fairway - left hand bunker and dug an area to plant some Lomandra grass that had been donated to us by Matt Snelson. The purpose of planting the grasses there is to prevent excess water rushing into the bunker area, eroding the soil & washing out the sand. When we had finished the camelias Peter, Di & I picked up the 19 pots of grasses, some more good garden soil and planted them in place using some good soil to help them along. We still have some more work to do here to complete the job of water erosion prevention.

Peter Martin, Des Wilson & Bert Brink transferred fertilizer and mulch to the gardens at the 6th. There is still a lot more mulching to be done as these gardens are so big.

Garry Trigg was on the rough cutter.

Jan Walker raked & cleaned up around the 1st & 10th tees.

Yvonne Wilson worked on the gardens at the front step entrance to the club, fertilized the gardenias & later, she & Des worked on her various gardens at the course including mending the hose at the front of the clubhouse.

We still have a lot more mulch to move out to the various gardens but I think we made a bit of a dent in the pile today. We have purchased a couple of Mandevilla plants to replace the bouganvillea that was removed at the 18th. Hopefully they will grow well there flowering for about 8 months of the year. They will be planted in this week sometime.

It was hard work but we did achieve some major projects with the camelias and grasses now ticked off the list.

YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Sunday 17th January 2010

What a weather mixture we had today for golf. The day started off with clear blue sky and very hot. By lunch time the storm clouds had gathered, quickly followed by thunder, lightning and rain. The lightning brought us all off the course for an hour or so until the competition resumed at 2 o'clock. We did have a few showers and rumbles of thunder during the rest of the afternoon . Those of us that regathered at 2.00 pm to resume our golf did manage to finish and some with surprisingly good scores. Our playing partners today were Ross & Christine Drakeford & they were great company. Ross & Christine had a good front 9 & Ross gave us some highlights during the day with a sandy at the 8th for a birdie and and another sandy at the 17th for a par. The boys decisively beat the girls for the keno ticket.

We were saved from severe heat today with some early morning cloud cover & some nice breezes. F-Troop Monday 11th January 2010

It was another huge day for F-Troop with much achieved. We had some good cloud cover for most of the day which made it much more comfortable to work.
Workers that I saw today were Martin Gallagher, Des Wilson, Warren Gray, Garry Trigg, Geoff Bridge, Peter Martin, Arthur Verlander, Noel Fenning, Bruce White, Yvonne Wilson, Anne Burgess and Di Beechey.
The main project of the day was painting the white fence down the boundary of the 18th fairway. I was sure that the troopers were not going to be able to complete the job in one day. The troopers proved me wrong and completed the job in about 3 hours. Well done Troopers - Martin Gallagher, Des Wilson, Geoff Bridge, Bruce White & Peter Martin!
While the fence painting was being completed Di Beechey & I finished off the weeding of the Native gardens at the 6th tee. This was quite a mean task but we got it completed by morning tea. Di also planted some more impatients at the water bubbler garden at the 1st & 10th tees. Thanks Di! I would not have been able to complete the job without your help.
Later in the morning Martin, Peter & Geoff planted a Flax Plant in the garden at the back of the 6th tee which was donated to us by Martin Gallagher. Thanks Martin!
Meanwhile Yvonne Wilson fertilized and mulched the "Little Gem" Magnolia garden & then later Yvonne & Des maintained their gardens at the 14th bush toilet area.
Anne Burgess watered and mulched her gardens behind the 10th green.
Warren Gray & Arthur Verlander did some heavy clean up work picking up rubbish & timber from around the course & did some hedging and trimming at the 2nd.
Garry Trigg was on the rough cutter.
Noel Fenning laid some safety matting at the 13th tee steps.
Later in the day I weeded & raked the 13th tee and the Ladies garden, watered at the wedding garden, cleaned & replentished the bird bath & weeded around the Lemon Magnolia Tree at the 18th.
Peter replaced & maintained some of the course markers including the 150 marker on the 15th.
Peter Davidson has donated to the club a couple of bench seats and an outdoor table which was very much appreciated. We will be able to put that to use in the next couple of weeks. Thanks Peter! - I am sure all the Members will enjoy the additional comfort around the course.
We had a comment today from a visitor who plays here about 6 times a year ( and who is now intending to join our club). His comment was that he could see the improvement done around the course & was impressed enough to join as a regular member.
YES! WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Golf - Sunday 10th January 2010

Fortunately it was not as hot today as it was yesterday & good golf was achievable with a nice breeze coming through for most of the day to keep the temperature bearable.
Our playing partners today were Ian & Lynda Hartley who were great company. Our golf scores were not wonderful but we had some good highlights along the way with three 3 pointers on the 6th and Lynda getting two 4 pointers. The girls beat the boys for the keno ticket on the 18th hole.
The Event of the day was a Team Event 1 x 2 x 3 plus Singles Mixed Men and Ladies.
We had 98 starters with 5 visitors from Overseas and Terrigal.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY as reported to me: Anne Smith won nearest the pin with her drive to the 8th (97cms) & she got the putt to score 2/5 and also got a good drive over the dam on the 3rd; Team of Neville Walker, Jan Walker, Ron Dekker & Chris Dekker- all four parred the 12th and scored 9 points for their team; Lynda Hartley scored 3/4 on the 12th & 4/4 on the 15th; Lynda & Ian Hartley jointly scored 7 points for the team on the 15th with a 3 pointer plus a 4 pointer; Terry Bowditch had birdies on the 1st, 2nd and the 3rd holes; Terry Coyle had 2/4 on the 14th; Yvonne Wilson sank some good long putts; Graham Brown nearly got a hole in one at the 8th and got the putt for 2/4, also did a great drive on the 14th; Team of George Foster, Vicki Foster, Clyde Cruickshanks & Lyn Cruickshanks got 9 points for their team on the 15th; Clyde Cruickshanks had birdies on the 5th and 16th and the boys beat the girls for the Keno ticket; Vicki Foster played a good back 9; Spencer Walklate, Tania Burt, Jan Van Den Berg & Elly Van Den Berg's highlights were cornettas & ices after the match; Spencer Walklate had 2/4 at the 5th; Jan Van Den Berg had 4 pointers at the 4th and the 16th.
Other highlights of the day were Annie Brinks birthday & she shared her birthday cake with us all (Thanks Annie & Happy Birthday); it was reported to me that Vicky Morris was heard to say 92 "buggers" (in a very Australian accent) during the match which is probably why I have no highlights listed above for her. Graham Smith hit off the wrong tee marker at the 9th claiming that the yellow markers looked white.
I have thrown in an update photo taken today of our grandson Joel who is now 8 months old just so that you do not fall behind with his progress.
